Couple of small chains have already tried this - and failed. Had to start selling popcorn again.
But I'm not surprised at which chains are talking of stopping selling it. Their audience are probably not real popcorn buyers, so it's probably no biggie for them to stop selling it.

Popcorn can be upmarket if they use the right sort, like the toffee covered one, that can cost a bomb at some cinemas.
