I am new to the site and have a question to you members that I am sur someone has already had the same issue that I am having with my Mini.

I recently purchased a non-runner mini cooper 2011 N16 engine, it had valve damage. I replaced the valves and the timing chain. I had originally purchased an ebay timing/cam locking tool which was a mistake. I have since then purchased the correct one from AST Tools. When I rebuilt the cylinder head and refitted it, I used the correct timing locking tool this time. When I have test run the car I am still getting Exhaust Cam timing error codes. The codes I am getting are 283D-VANOS Exhaust: Adaptation Limit Position & 296B Exhaust Camshaft Sensor. I used another scanning tool to read the OBD codes and got similar issues P0014-B Camshaft Position Timing Over Advanced or System Performance Bank 1 & P0366 Camshaft Position Sensor B - Circuit Range/Performance Bank 1.

I have tried serval times to reset the timing again by reinserting the tools and setting the chain again, no difference. I replaced the Cam Position Sensors and the VANOS solenoids and that has made no difference. I reset the adaptation using my scanner but it has limited functionality and I am not convinced it did anything.

Can anyone help please? Does it need to be reset by a specialist using a more advanced scanning tool?
