Hello - this is my new toy, a 2015 F56 Cooper S.
I’ve been driving an Audi TT for 20 odd years and was very involved in the owner’s scene; writing for the TTOC magazine, organising meets and drives and even writing a book about the car. We moved to the Scottish Borders from Manchester a couple of years ago and it has proved impossible to find decent local mechanics capable of keeping a complex but ageing car like the TT on the road so I’ve reluctantly had to let it go. The upside however is that it has given me the opportunity to try a car I’ve had my eye on for a long time - the Mini.
It’s a very different drive to the TT. Perhaps not as quick point-to-point because the TT’s Quattro drive really gives an advantage in the corners, but that same “on rails” handling also makes the TT feel very safe - almost numb. In comparison the Mini is a different beast. Initially the handling felt jittery - but only as a comparison. A few weeks in having explored the limits of the car I’d more accurately describe it as lively. I’m really enjoying it. Like the TT it’s a really well designed interior to sit in so that’s suiting me too.
The car came with very little history so I’m assuming it’s standard. I did get the TT tuned and I understand it is quite easy and safe to get significantly more power out of this engine. Undecided at the moment as I’m enjoying it plenty enough as it is but some discussion around that would be welcome, especially suggestions of trusted tuners in my area.
I’m in the Borders near Eyemouth and it would be great to meet up with any enthusiastic owners in the area for a meet and a drive.
