    Good day all,

Had the R56 for about 2 years now, been a good little run around, it's a nice car for a 1.4, maybe a little breathless, but it's a cheap commuter for work..
recently, it's decided it want to play up, had a new cat fitted at the MOT, then a couple of weeks or month later the CEL came on, and it idles rough, wants to die at low revs when you come to junctions/ traffic lights.. occasionally there is a puff or two of smoke out the back, then you never see it again for a week or so.. fuel/ air mix is certainly off, due to the smell.. I just thought it was the O2 sensor..

Bought a Creator C501 reader, so here are the codes returned..

    P0130 O2 Sensor Circuit: Bank 1 Sensor 1
    P2243 O2 Sensor Reference Voltage Circuit/ Open: Bank 1 Sensor 1
    P0135 02 Sensor Heater Circuit: Bank 1 Sensor 1
    P2251 O2 Sensor Negative Current Control Circuit/ Open: Bank 1 Sensor 1
P0012 A Camshaft Position Timing Over – Retard: Bank 1
P0131 O2 Sensor Circuit Low Voltage: Bank 1 Sensor 1
P0015 B Camshaft Positioning Timing Over – Retard: Bank 1

2AB4 DME: Oxygen Sensor before Catalytic Converter: Electrical
2AA3 DME: Oxygen Sensor before Catalytic Converter: Nernst Line
2A66 DME: Oxygen Sensor Heater before Catalytic Converter: Electrical
2AAB DME: Oxygen Sensor before Catalytic Converter: Virtual Earth
287D DME: VANOS, Inlet: Actuator Movement
2A99 DME: Oxygen Sensor before Catalytic Converter: Sensor Lines
2845 DME: VANOS, Exhaust: Actuator Movement
2A64 DME: Oxygen Sensor Heater before Catalytic Converter: Function
2AC4 DME: Oxygen Sensor Heater before Catalytic Converter: Plausibility

    CD-GW/ M-ASK-GW (Control Display (Gateway) – CIC-GW/ CCC-GW

Any help is greatly appreciated, I kind of understand some of it, but always good to ask people that know more than you on a subject..

    1. Would replacing both the Vanos sensors and the upper O2 sensor be a good start?
    2. There is no rattle from the cam chain, but would it be an idea to look at this?

    Cheers,

    Ed

I’m guessing you cleared all codes, ran the engine again and checked the codes ?

You can never be sure how many were code hiding from before you had any issues.

Did you replace the sensor at the same time as replacing the CAT? There will also be codes that come have that have been there for a while with no correlation to how that car is just now. Certainly seems like an O2 issue with you saying that it’s running rough and also being able to smell it.
