You’ll see us all parked together, HF usually get us parked round the front on the forecourt

    A great event today.

I'll start off by saying that this was my first EV experience so it won't be a shock to hear that the SE was a real (and pleasant) surprise. I'm not an EV enthusiast and so my only interest in the SE is that it's a new take on the MINI package. I'm aware of the SE's drawbacks compared to other EV's.

The first surprise was pulling out of the "launch bay". I don't really know what I was expecting but the spaceship style hum just sounded so... alien. It was very cool. Out on the road it feels very much like a MINI, which to me is a positive. The low-speed hum fades away once you start moving quicker and all you're left with is wind and tyre noise. At cruising speeds that's all you really hear in a petrol-fuelled MINI so there's not much difference in that regard.

The second surprise comes when you squeeze it. Call me an EV noob but the way it takes off - I can't see that getting old. It's a genuine party trick. Part of that, of course, is due to the instant torque of the electric motor but part of it's also down to the new TCS that MINI has developed. I'm not technically minded enough to know exactly how it works but what I can say is that it generated far more traction on the wet roads today than I was expecting. For a FWD car, the amount of traction that the new system can generate is exceptional. I certainly wouldn't have been able to accelerate that hard and that efficiently in any of my previous petrol-powered vehicles. Whether the GP will be able to replicate this party trick when it comes remains to be seen.

The only drawback for me today remains the range. We covered around 110miles today going to and from the event. That's pretty much bang on the SE's operational range and that's without factoring in any energy-sapping extras like heated seats, infotainment and the occasional stretching of the right foot. That having been said, the SE more than makes a case for itself as a short-trip vehicle and, given our experience today, I'd struggle to buy a petrol powered vehicle now if that was my use.

All in though I was very pleasantly surprised and I'm excited to see how things develop for MINI going forward.

I'd also like to thank Charmaine and Adam and the HF team for hosting us all once again and for all the delicious cakes and sandwiches that were on offer.

It was also great to meet some of the new folks. Hopefully you enjoyed your first NMS event.

A huge thank you to everyone who came along today, it was also nice to see some new faces there. Also a huge thank you to Charmaine, Adam and the rest of the HF Team for putting on such a great day and answering all our questions about the new SE.

I was pleasantly surprised by the SE and what it has to offer, yes the range isn’t quite what we would all like it to be but it drives exactly as you would expect a MINI to drive just with the lack of pops and bangs. Can I see us getting one, in short YES, but not until it comes to a natural point in changing cars, that may be Megan’s next car or the car after that. It’ll all depend on what MINI do with the E brand and how it will filter through the range. A hatch just wouldn’t be practical with the little one arriving in June.

Great day out ,new faces which is nice and good food ...loved the cakes.
‘Electric cars like it or not are here and they are not bad at all ,accelerating today on wet roads would have left a JCW struggling to keep up ,not once did it fail to grip ,will it suit everyone probably not but then we are all different.
