Second hand buying experience

Evening all! I’ve just put a deposit down on a JCW Paceman (the ultimate in marmite cars!?!?) and although excited by the prospect, I don’t feel we’ve ‘gained’ through our 2nd hand buying experience. We went in with no trade-in, paying in cash (well, bank transfer) so am I just a bit too old school where you feel like there should be some form of enticement involved, a wee deal, bargain, treat or even money off? Obviously we could have just walked away and not signed on the line for the car but I’m honestly fed up looking and this one ticked all the boxes except the paintwork, it’s going to have to go to a detailers once we get our hands on it.

Has anyone had any good experience with buying second hand cars or do you only get treated well when you buy new? (When I got my first mini new there were some nice wee accessories and bits and pieces provided as well as a full tank of fuel).

Anyway, still looking forward to picking it up!

If the dealer cares at all about their customers they'll make a fuss over them regardless of what they've buying and how much they're spending.

If you're walking away somehow feeling that by buying a used car you've not been treated the same as buying a new one, then they've not done their job properly IMO

Feet were made to fit car pedals. If we were meant to walk, we'd have pogo sticks for legs

When I bought my R59 JCW is was up for sale at £13,300. I told them that I wanted the black caps and stripes changing to Chilli Red before I bought it though.
After faffing about with his calculator the salesman said that it would cost an extra £750 to change the stripes and caps.
After a chat he was shocked when he thought that I still wanted to still pay the asking price.
I laughed and replied “no” and that I was only willing to pay £13K.
He said that there was no way he could spend £750 on it and still sell it for £300 less than the original asking price.
I told him that I would be paying in cash and that I didn’t need to buy the car but he did need to sell it.
After leaving me for nearly an hour he came back from the managers office and shook my hand and the deal was done.
I personally can’t complain about my experience of buying a 2nd hand from a MINI dealer. They only advice I can give is that you can’t let them think that you’re really excited about buying a car from them or that you need to buy it. If they know that you will walk away if they don’t agree a lower price it “encourages” them to be more sensible with the price.

Did you ask for money off, something thrown in? If you’be test drove the car and turned round and said you’ll take it, I can’t see why they would give you money of thinking you where happy with the deal.

We were there for 3 hours before we agreed to take it so definitely not and of course we asked for some sort of deal! They argued the case that money could not be taken off (despite admitting they got the car at auction), we were going to get £50 discount on the paint coating as we aren’t taking it but that seemed pretty pointless.

Yeah we tried that too, even the manager came over and had a lengthy discussion about how there was next to no wiggle room for negotiation! Also quite a lengthy discussion about minis too that we’ve both had, past and present!

If your not happy with the deal you’ve gotten then pull out? There will be other JCW Paceman our there, if your stuck on a Paceman.

There are currently 4 for sale in Scotland which is the most there have been for over a year, only 332 in the country exist. We were going to look at one in Warrington but going by previous experience of condition, it’s shocking how few people out there actually look after their cars. This is the only one that has had the spec I’m after purely because it’s an ex demonstrator so that is why we’ve gone for it. I’m fed up waiting and looking only to keep finding issues. I need to accept the fact they’re a rare car and just go with the best I can find and accept the consequences!

The one I bought had been in their hands for 18 months so I knew that they wanted to get rid of it.
It helped that I called in at the Saturday 27th January so they’d have wanted an extra sale to boost that months figures.

Yep, the opposite of us! This one only came on the market this week (checking online pretty much every day for a VERY long time!!) and going in on the 3rd of the month!
