........ ok, i use paint shop pro for all my picture editing, cropping and e-mailing etc.
I currently own the X2 version.

What i want to do is to basically get the greyscale background with a single coloured item, most probably my car, but, will also do people.

So, question is, anyone got a link to an idiots guide to do this?

If you google it there is a photoshop guide of how to .. Everything I would imagine it'll assist in your quest .. Might not be exactly the same but it'll give you an idea of how to achieve the results you want .. I'll try & get the link later for you
You only need two tools in life WD40 and Duct Tape. If it doesn't move and should use WD40 and if it moves and shouldn't use Duct Tape.

Make 2 layers and make the top layer black/white. Then using eraser on the black/white layer and erase out what you want to bring into colour.

or make a cut out of the item. Once cut out select the rest of the picture and make it grey. the cut out will stay in colour. I normally trace the area myself zooming in rather than using say an edge finder, works for me.

I presume this is the kind of thing your on about.
