Rover Cooper
My brother has just bought a 98 Cooper Sport. The engine now will not idle but apart from that runs fine. its only done 21000 miles. I have been told that this could be caused by a faulty ecu. I have worked on lots of minis in the past but not a multi point injection one. Can anyone shed any light on this problem????

An ECU failure is rare. Get a Rover garage to "read" the ECU for you and it may tell them what is wrong - a sensor or something like that most likely. Is the fan running? (it should only run occasionally). I've been told that MiniMart in Fife (search Google) has the necessary equimpent to diagnose it properly.

Had a local garage "read" the ecu. The found the following faults:
Ambient air temp circuit failure
Oil temperature sensor failure
Will this cause the car not to idle at all??
I am in the dark with these electics so any info would be a great help thanks.
(Minimart informed me they did not have a computer to do it. strange?)

Things have changed a bit since BL - my mini never had an ecu - I think the heater was optional - in the old days you just tweaked the carb while looking at the colour of the exhaust smoke.
