It does look a big taller, and the wheels look like cartwheels. Needs some wider rubber on the new one

“Does its bum look big in this?”
Initially. I was all for giving the new car a fair crack, but the more I see and hear about it, the harder it is to like it. They have, literally, made a right *rse of our lovely car. I thought 'High Waisters' went out in the 70's. As I've said on other threads, gone are the MINI design/marketing petrolheads, replaced by some cuddly toy/activity centre designers from the Early Learning Centre. SACRILEGE!
The whole stance/proportion has lost it, looks as if their 'vertical hold' has gone - it looks too 'upright'. The wheels now look too small, so folks will fit massive ones to compensate and b*gg*r the handling. The whole back bumper with those silly reflectors just looks cheap and nasty. Bland, Bland, Bland. Who ARE these people? Give'em three years and it'll look like a big Micra! Sack 'em.... hang 'em!!!! Sorry.
Andy, I'd cut down on the mind-altering substances and stick to Werther's!!! You really should have gone to 'Specsavers'. If you trade your fab MINI in for that Tonka Toy, I may have to take drastic action...

Got to agree with almost everyone here ;)
Yuk! They've broke it. I can't believe they've actually made the car look like one of those really cheap toy cars that are meant to look like Minis :(
The only saving grace so far has been the photos of the S with the Aero Kit.. And even then I'd feel cheated, cos I know the scoop serves absolutely no purpose at all :(:(
granted there are some nice touches.. I like most of the interior.. but no stereo to swap out?
I'll certainly be in no rush to trade in now. Haven't they heard of 'if it ain't broke. don't fix it'?
The last facelift was spot on, all the right things were changed (in my opinion).. but this time? Yuk.
Lets hope they change the looks again before it's time for me to be looking for a new car...:blackeye:

Don't want to get carried away here, as the new car will (probably) still be better than 90% of the 'opposition' (tried the new Clio 197 anyone?), but it's as if the aliens have replaced a beloved member of your family with someone who ALMOST looks and acts like them, but you know there's something wrong..... Maybe the “Mothership” Run was a bit more accurate than we thought.....

I have to admit I'm quite surprised - The blue ONE (surely not) in Angus's collage ('Auto Bild' photo rear 3/4 view) looks a bit better with the Bullet alloys, and the back end looks a WHOLE LOT better than the dark 'S' below it. Nearly gets away with the higher waist too. Maybe the colour makes a big difference? Hmmm...
As for the yellow 'S' bodykitted back end... “Porsche Cayenne's R Us”? Horrible. Looks like a fat, flattened, jaundiced Cyberman.
Be a laugh if the ONE looks much better than the (rather overblown - even tho' it isn't anymore) 'S', eh? There's a quandry for fast MINI buyers! Overall, I'm still not convinced. Ta Angus for the comparison shots. Very interesting. But try to just have a couple of pints (hic!) before you whack on the dates!

Elfman, there's no danger of a trade-in just now. Totally skint. But as soon as our circumstances change, we'll be straight into a dealer.
Sorry to p!ss on everyone's parade, but I like the look of the new Mini. Granted the Laser/Lightning blue cooper on this thread (http://www.newminiscotland.co.uk/snitzforums/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=9473) looks awful - looks like a cross between bad tooth decay and some Amanda Holden style collagen-gone-wrong surgery.
Otherwise, love the looks - the JCW aero kits, the bonnet - even with the useless scoop and it's ass. Maybe it does look big in what it comes in. So what though, stick an aero kit on and watch those pounds fall off. :approve: Out yer wallet too mind you. As for the interior, really need to see in in the flesh, but from the pics I've seen so far.....:approve::approve::approve::approve:

Andy I quote - “Sorry to piss on everyone's parade....” remind me to bring a brolly on the next run.....
“stick an aero kit on watch those pounds fall off...” maybe we could just make everything else in the world BIGGER and it would look smaller...still if you drive a 4x4 in real life..... Sorry Andy, couldn't resist!
I know there are many reasons (“Safety” Laws, more economic Manufacturing process etc) for the new shape, but I still reckon the Glass/Body area proportion is comparitively “uncomfortable”. And the headlights now look massive. Caused perhaps by the fact that the lights are now fixed to the body and not the bonnet, causing the chrome bonnet apertures to be bigger than the original lights? No excuses for the cack rear Bumper though.
“Evo” magazine are running a full test on the new 'S' in their next issue (out @ end of month), so that should be interesting. If it's a better drive than the current model, I'll forgive it somewhat. I'll bite my tongue till then!

Thanks Angus, very interesting Aussie article. Sounds as if the new car is a noticable improvement over the current car - dynamically. It received a positive review on last night's 'Fifth Gear'. I'm looking forward to 'Evo's' test of the 'S'.
I'd like to see the new car with a Chrome Front Grille as opposed to the cheap & nasty black plastic. Seems the new car is more 'refined', but the 'rawer' edge of the old car still appeals to me - depends what you're looking for....... I'd like to try some of the ÒNew GenerationÓ Runflats though - sounds as if they've tried to address the current model's suspension/tyre niggles. Probably rides the same as my JCW set-up now...... Looking at the side view, the increase in the body height has the effect of making the wheels (even 17's) look smaller - 16's would be lost on it - so an 'S' with the Sports suspension, 18's and a Chrome Exterior would maybe look pretty good. No 'Cayenne' bodykits though! What do you reckon? I'm always open to persuasion......

Weeeeellllllll... after seeing the Cooper S on 5th Gear last night, I'm glad to say my opinions are changing for the better... Still not so keen on the fat face and bulging eyes, or the fake scoop, but the rest of the car is DEFINITELY growing on me!!
Got to say the new exhaust note for the S is awesome! Hope it's like that on the production models!
Now... If they can sort out the centre console so it doesn't look cheap, and provide me with a space for a nice stereo, I'll be a happy continuing customer!! ;):D:D
Good Articles too Angus!

got to admit I had a wee chuckle to myself last night when the guy said they have made the arches bigger.
I just saw the extra ££££ that dealers would add on for colour coding.
KenL
17th October 2006, 09:36 PM
I hope the arches are of better quality plastic this time. That is one thing that bugged me about the MINI. It took AGES to get them looking black and no matter what product you use (& I tried a few) they would not stay black for long enough.
There are a few black plastic bit on my Golf and they have not needed blackening at all in the 2 years I've had it.
