View Full Version : My new classic Mini - "Alfie!

I just travelled to Brighton to collect my classic Mini - a 1994 Cooper 1.3spi with some careful mods.

I'm over the moon! I can't stop grinning. Oh god this is fun. Noisy. Cramped but oh my god its fun! Instant reactions and its FAST! It feels faster than my 2004 Cooper most of the time (up until about 70mph). The reactions from people are awesome too. Its also dramatically quicker and I think more fun than my 1998 Cooper 1.3mpi was.

Its been reshelled so has NO-ZERO rust!!

Sitting in it for the first time:-

It got the name Alfie after my pal Calum, who helped me buy it, who has a wee dog by the same name with all the same characteristics (fun, small, a bit naughty, can go fast!)

They must all be the same :D Gotta watch out for those Alfie's :D:cool:

Looks super clean though, any plans for him? 8)

I need to fit the Hi-los (that it came with) so that i can lift it up a bit - its too low.

I've got an RC50 to fit, alongwith a cat-drop pipe

and then i'm onto a CD player and some decent speakers - its still got its original Rover tape player and cardboard speakers!

I also would like to get it re-waxoyled to within an inch of its life...

Sweet Rob!! Looking good :D

Would 'Calum' be *the* Calum of Clan fame?
If so, how's he doing? not seen the bugger for Aaaaaaaaages! (well except on the Thistle Run!:D)

Can vouch for the long journey from Brighton tho!
...although we did make it home from Brighton one summer (London To Brighton Run 2001 I think) in 8 hours!! :eek::eek:

what other mods have been done? Loks like a nice set of 165s, Falkens? ;) that's all I can see from the pics... :D

Its the second half of the journey thats a killer, despite cruising at 80 most of the way, we felt we were "nearly home" for about 4 hours!

Yes it was Clan Calum indeed! We stayed in his driveway caravan and in the morning he plied me with Mini parts from his loft (his missus was very relieved!). He'd been to check the car for me a week or so ago... he's had to sell his "Ernie" and I think was a bit jealous!

Yes its Falkens... they'll be replaced with Yoko's though...

Its got an LCB and a K&N pancake filter (noisy wee blighter!). Hi-los on the back. Walnut dash (which is coming out).

quote:But What is with the Square on the Side??In 1994 Rover celebrated 30 years since the 1964 Monte Carlo win. They did this with a 'Monte Carlo' Pack - a main part of which was the door square! If you look at road tests from 1994 in old car mags (which I have hoarded away!) all the road test Coopers that year had them. The previous owner had them fitted since new. Its really not covering rust, honest!

I've had a VERY busy 2 weeks, but its been a lot of fun!! Many thanks to various Mini Clanners (and a couple of NMS-ers!) for their assistance and answers to my annoying questions - you know who you are!

* New, original Rover high-level brake light fitted.
* Exhaust replaced with nice new stainless RC40 - sounds fab!
* Bald tyre replaced (due to car being too low previously!
* Rear Hi-Los raised to normal height!
* New battery cover (& clamped battery in properly!)
* New clips fitted to distributor shield (all 3 of them)
* Fan belt tightened using My First Crowbar
* 1 Headlight replaced - but still Sealed beams
* Boot lock rotated so that it works the way i'm used to
* Wooden dash removed and on the way to restoring original dash.
* Entire interior shampood - huge difference made to roof-lining - (Thanks autoglym!)
* All leather cleaned & conditioned
* Alarm fixed (need a new plipper but don't know how to get one)
* Interior light rewired and bulb replaced (I actually understood a Haynes wiring diagram!!)
* Reversing bulb replaced
* Rear light units cleaned out because they were a bit dim
* Roof trim removed and small bubbles of rust treated
* Speaker wired up properly - it'll do for now... original tape player & cardboard speakers!
* Seat fold/adjust mechanisms sorted
* New clutch pedal rubber fitted
* Original, new gearknob fitted
* Door mirror temporarily fixed (it doesnt magnify now).
* Noisy K&N Air filter thing removed and airbox replaced with new screws and tested.
* New K&N filter element fitted

And on the "To Do" list are....

* Full Service - including a thorough greasing!
* Investigate slightly uneven idle
* Investigate/raise front section of exhaust - seems too low.
* Investigate squint steering wheel.
* Re-treatment of Waxoyl
* New washer bottle
* Finish the dash re-assembly
* New front cones
* Sony CD player and the very best 16.5cm speakers I can find. An amp *may* follow...
* Possibly re-fitting the bonnet stripes that he came with... maybe...
* New passenger mirror.
* The rear bumper appears to be incorrect - it may be a front one???
* New rear light unit (one is cracked inside)
* Fix rear screen heater (one line is not working)
* Fix brake-fail warning light - it annoys me!

Great work Rob :cool:
Mini front & rear bumpers are the same but even genuine ones don't seem to sit right sometimes
