Hi folks, i got into Abertay to do a degree in Computer Arts and im looking to buy a Laptop that will be powerful enough to handle the graphics and video editing.

Anyone know any good places to buy performance laptops from budget is around £1000 :)

Probably PC World, make sure the laptop has a dedicated video card that does NOT share the onboard ram, also, get as much ram as you can afford, at least 1024 MB, if you can opt for Nvidia type cards, they are better than ATI in my opinion :)
Most all laptop's will have a big enough hard drive, you might even get some change from your budget ;)

What he says ^ :D and the Nvidia part for sure!!!
tried plying Prey on my laptop just running off the battery. the experience could best be desribed as 'horrible' :D:D:D
So a dedicated card is the only way to go!

PS, well done wee man! you won't be breaking our PCs then

Could give overclockers (http://www.overclockers.co.uk/acatalog/Portable_Computers.html) a browse, haven't had any troubles when i've dealt with them.

Acer looks like a good deal :)

I was also looking at Alien-ware but their prices are much higher for laptops of less spec than the Acer... from what i can see anyway.

Thanks for the advice going to look closer at the Acer machine

Are Alienware not just Dell machines these days?
I got a Dell laptop through the work HCI scheme, before it ended.
Its OK, but I didn't get to spec it. Just waiting for my replacement battery though

I've got a friend that's got an Acer Laptop, and no complaints, and I picked up a 10Gb Acer MP3 player for £80, so they are good value.

Considered a Mac laptop? I thought they were always the best for professional graphic work? Macbook Pro (http://www.apple.com/macbookpro/)

External HDD is a terrific idea too.

Go for mega memory, or buy an external hard drive... 300Gig should do it. Thats just for video though.

If its 3D studio max n stuff your using, you just need a quick processor speed for all that rendering. Make sure your wireless enabled too becasue if Abertay is anything like RGU, the whole place will be WiFi.

photoshop, freehand etc etc dont require anything special...

If you want a high spec laptop for much cheapness, go for the Acer. Its pretty much a sony vaio but cheaper. Same deal as bang&olufsen and Panasonic. You can get acer laptops in Tesco!!!

OH, and buy yourself a graphics tablet or a REALLY high quality optical mouse!!!! And a DVD burner would be useful!

There's also a Magazine called What Laptop that WH Smith keep.

Reviews laptops and has best buys etc listed at the back, The Acer won best sub £1300 laptop and seeing Comet were doing it for £800 on line thats why i went for it as it was the best spec for the Money.

I also looked at the Sony Vaio's, very nice machines but another £200 - £300 for similar spec and i didnt think it was worth it.
