If your C drive is full to the gunnels theres a simple solution. Either empty stuff out of it or buy a bigger hard drive. Your HDD needs a bit of slack to be able to move stuff around and have it's own "working space".

I would say buy an external USB 2.0 drive and move a pile of your stuff onto that. Handy if you want to move stuff to another PC and also means you don't have to open up your computer if you aren't confident with that sort of thing.

This is a nice one: DABS - External Hard Drive (http://www.dabs.com/productview.aspx?Quicklinx=40VN&CategorySelectedId=11154&PageMode=1&NavigationKey=11154,4294960320,44000000,50473,1)

Can a moderator fix this link(give it an easier link) for me because I can't get it to work on this board for some reason. Ta.

As for the Defender thing, I was getting the same so I uninstalled it. It's only beta after all so it's probably a bug and nothing to do with your PC.

You could always fit another drive internally , or get this (http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/80GB-2-5-External-Portable-Hard-Disk-Drive-USB-2-0-NEW_W0QQitemZ8829828772QQcategoryZ16178QQrdZ1QQcmd ZViewItem) great for on the move as well and only about the size of a packet of cigars

get an external drive. Most of the stuff in the 'My Documents' folder should be safe to move onto an external harddrive.

Try emptying your 'recieved files' and 'my music' by either deleting or copying the contents onto an external drive or CD or DVD.

You can also delete your temporary internet files through internet explorer.

That should help a little.

And yeah, delete all your porn, but only as a last resort.

Have a quick browse throug Control Panel->Add/Remove Programs

If there is anything in there you know for sure you dont use, remove it! Should free up some space. Defo get rid of any preloaded pish that would have been orginally installed and never used!

Then have a rummage through C->Program Files. If you have previously unistalled programs, some tend to keep files and saved data which is now usless in folders here. So if you know something is long gone....just delete the folder, should do no harm at all!!

My advice would be to save any important files that you have onto a DVD or another hard drive and do a complete fresh install, assuming you have all the disks that is ;)

To burn a disk shouldn't use any/much space on your hard disk, unless you have the burner software set to create an image before burning :p or even no space at all
As others have said, go into the control panel, add remove programmes and see if there are any programmes in there that you don't use, then simply uninstall them, that should create some space to allow you to burn to a DVD.

Then and only then can you think of formatting an reinstalling the operating system :)

Rubbish.......you could lose your temper like I did and just reinstall XP and suffer the consequences (SP?!) of lost files later :D
Just kidding, back up your files first, then go for it! :)

Every year or 18 months or so, I buy a new hard drive from a cheap local place... they get faster and faster and cheaper and cheaper... i then run a simple "clone" operation from Symantec Ghost, and then swap the drives over. My local place currently has 250gb for £53...

You have to look after your computer though. Its not like a television... you MUST know what you've filled your computer with and therefore what to delete. MP3s? videos? Tons of software?

Whether its an Apple or a PC, a little bit of routine maintenance and housework goes a loooooooong way!!

Mini Me
20th June 2006, 10:33 PM
ok , i removed all the programmes i dont use,job done !
but my c drive only has 2% space left and when i look in it there's like 40,000 files full of stuff i know nout about ,my fear is deleating files that will effect the running of the PC.

Then again, it's days are numbered anyway

Not im my experience. The files/folders/crap tying up his hard drive will still be there. Re installing Xp will freshen up the XP files but to be honest, with only 2% free the chances of a trouble-free install are, well, about 2%. All IMHO.

Iain, maybe try setting the recycle bin to the lowest setting, that should free up some space.
But, as Fi says, you must have some junk on there for it to only have 2 per cent free, if it was a 40 gig hard drive that equals like 8 MB

It all makes sense.:D

Iain, I spoke to Craig to let him know where the problem lies. I hope our phone call this evening put your mind at rest; no new hard drive required:D, no windows re-install required:D, in fact you won't even need to delete any of your files:D:D.

Craig suspects your music download software is probably defaulting to save your albums on your small partition. It will probably just be a case of moving the downloaded music from one partition to another and then altering the default settings within your download software.

Absolutly nothing to worry about.:D:D
