vga cable Q

Maybe some one can shed some light on this. I got a VGA Cable from PC World, I tried to connect up a screen to my computer but there was no signal.

The cable has a pin missing in the middle row at each end, is the right ?

Any advice would be much appreciated

What kind of screen??? TV, LCD, Plasma, or even a computer screen :p
Can you try using the cable with your computer screen to check the cable works :question: if you can and it does then the settings on your screen may be wrong, or it may need drivers to recognise it

Hi Bonnie, its a TFT screen ( HP 1740 ) I am connecting it upto the PC I got from VB, which he got from you ( i think )

I tried to connect it but it would not detect it, on closer inspection it has a pin missing on each end of the cable.

make sure the refresh rate is set low enough and the resolution isn't too high, tft's are generally 75hz max and 1280x1024, although it SHOULD display a message saying the signal is too high a frequency etc.

There's two monitor outputs on the back of the PC, the one you want to use is on the graphics card not the motherboard it has 15 pins.

It should only be set to 800x600 as thats what I was using on my projector. Give me a call to discuss I've PM'd my number to ya.

I am sussed on the video card, but the screen does not detect it.

Yup, mine has a missing pin as well. I'll be in tomorrow pretty much all day.

We have similar (maybe the same) hp monitors at work, I'll check the m tomorrow but I'm sure those pins aren't used.

I take it the original cable is missing as you had to buy a replacement from PCW? Do you have another monitor you can use to test the PC is ok?

Why not get the DVI cable instead, that way you'll get a better picture :)

Now theres the problem.

The people at Maplin and PC world were very unhelpful so I went with VGA.

Do you kow if I can get cable with alternate Male DVI ends

We used them for the LCD monitors at the front of the Cinema.
I think they can make up any cable you want.
The only downside is you dont get it straight away.

Our office machines have the same output as this. They are for dual output. We have splitters with 2 vga ends attatched.

Correction to what I said above, they aren't just for dual displays. The one on your monitor is a digital only plug and the output on the card is digital and analogue. Have a look at this:

I can't get photos right now but the cable I have has vga male at one end and DVI-I male at the other. Is that going to be any good? I think it might very just be ideal. :D

It's number 5 on your list at one end and vga on the other which makes sense. It's still a bit weird that the vga-vga didn't work. You can have it if you want it.

OK, I have run the monitor off this laptop via VGA cable, and it works fine, but when I run it off the PC, nothing, Nada, looks like its a graphics card issue, I will take the panel off later and see whats what.
