lacquer on polished metal advice

I like to polish me rim :I I mean the rims on a bike, but its a pain to keep up the shine.

Does anyone know if it possible to lacquer bare metal thats been polished ?

Monki - in my biking days I used to polish my alloy bits with autosol then wash them in soapy water and then laqre them and it worked fine although the shine on the alloy does dim a bit with the laqre.
