never noticed, although isn't there slight differences in the dimension of the cars? (cooper s is wider i think?)

So you can hear the exhaust! The cars are the same size.

You also change yer tune more times than a local DJ! You telt me it's so that the poppy exhaust is more audible! Bull$hittin ba$$!
Out of curiosity though...even if the cars were a different width, why the hell would a grill in the parcel shelf be necessary?!?!? :)

Diesel didn't have it and that's got the battery in the same place as the S.

That's cos it's for the exhaust noise. Ignore Avis!;)

I don't think it's either for the exhaust or battery. The boot is hardly airtight (vents under rear hatch) and the wee vent thingy would hardly make that much difference to the exhaust noise. If they wanted to make the exhaust note more noticable they could either make the exhaust louder or remove some of the foam from the vents.
I did everything I could to make the most of with my S exhaust. I removed one of the back boxes, took all the foam out of the vents and drove without a parcel shelf even then it was still fairly quiet.
I reckon its just a style thing to differentiate the S from the other cars.

A style thing? In the inside of the boot? On the underside of the parcel shelf?

I'm sure they said it was for exhaust noise when they brought out the S originally...

Nope its definately for the Battery gases hence why its not adviceable to do a big boot install as this would seal them in

It definately isn't otherwise the diesel would have a vented shelf too!

Dear Mr Wilson
Thank you for contacting MINI Customer Information.
We can confirm that the reason for the grill on the parcel shelf is to bring the acoustics of the Twin Exhaust sound into the vehicle.
We hope this answers your question.
Yours sincerely

Nae wonder they sacked that dobber Iain! He had nae idea what he wiz talking about. "It's so the battery gasses can vent into the boot". Pfff! That Vidal Buffoon's a fudd an all! :approve:

Aside from anything...Why would you want battery gases venting into the cabin (and yer lungs). I'm totally confused by this whole idea cos I thought the battery was meant to be sealed anyhoo!;)
