Does anyone know of a decent alternative to Norton? £40 seems excessive to me.

AVG anti-virus. Its funded by corprations who want to distract attention from the big software companies, so, its FREE! And its used widely in the IT world. I use it, its good, nuff said.

Yes... yes I do actually ;)

Staff and students of the Uni get to download McAfee for free :p:p:p

But seriously, AVG is good too. Used it for a couple of years at work till the newest version of McAfee came out.

nod32 is by far the best anti virus i have used.

one year subscription is £23

http://www.nod32uk.com/purchase/purchase.htm

Also, any reviews of anti virus'es i read online rated nod32 in its top few, so much better than system hogging norton, and updates daily, and detects viruses a lot faster (yes i know the plural for virus is virii :p before one of you smart***es comments :p)

AVG i have also head good things about, but also some not so good.

This smart*** feels obliged to comment!

Actually you used the correct plural - viruses.

People often incorrectly use viri or virii, especially on the internet in relation to computer viruses but repeated use doesn't make it correct. No major dictionary recognises this form - yet, as far as I'm aware.

Viri is actully the plural of the Latin word, 'vir' (meaming 'man', as in 'virile') which makes 'viri' mean 'men'. The 'ii' suffix is only used when a word ends in 'ius' like 'radius' - 'radii'.

Here endith the lesson!;)

PC World were flogging Internet Security 06 for 25 quid.
They might still have them at that price.

I'd avoid norton if you want to keep your pc running at any sort of pace!!

We're using the free PCGuard from blueyonder the now and it's good - also got a free version of Kaspersky on disc too - a genuine free version! It has built in spyware thingies too!

AVG is excellent and I wouldn't touch mcAfee with a bargepole, even if it was free!!

I think we should buy him some cream considering he keeps looking up viruses on the internet. ;)

Yup, another vote for AVG here, had no problems with it. My biggest problem is trying to un-install an old copy of Mcafee!

Is it?
That should be the free downloads page.. the top one. it says summat at the top of the page about trial versions being somewhere else....

This (http://www.download.com/AVG-Anti-Virus-Free-Edition/3000-2239_4-10503939.html?tag=lst-0-2) is DEFINITELY the free version, from www.download.com. :D:D

Cheers again Ewan, i'll try installing over the next couple of days, does it automatically update the virus definitions or do you have to do it manually?
Also, does it have a built in spyware e-mail thing, pop up blocker etc

Burple
15th March 2006, 08:40 PM
It automatically updates itself :D:D
It doesn't however come with any pop up blockers or anti-spyware software. I use Firefox cos it has a built in pop up blocker, and both (or either) of Spybot (http://www.download.com/Spybot-Search-Destroy/3000-8022_4-10401314.html?tag=lst-0-1) and Adaware (http://www.download.com/Ad-Aware-SE-Personal-Edition/3000-8022_4-10399602.html?tag=lst-0-1)..
Incidentally, Spybot appear to have a product for any Symbian based mobile phones too.. I might have to try that out!

As for a firewall, ZoneAlarm (http://www.download.com/3000-2092-10039884.html) gets my vote... and yes.. that's free too, and very easy to use! :D

I might have it sorted Fi but if not that's be excellent. :) I'll let you know.
