Just heard from a source inside a BMW garage that the engine inside the new mini will be made by Peugeot instead of Chrysler??

The new engines are being jointly developed by BMW and Peugeot. They will be built in England at BMW's plant.

Should be a big leap forward for the MINI, the current engine is not that well reviewed in terms of refinement etc. I was never that happy with the economy when I had the ONE. Averaged about 5mpg less than my current Golf which is more powerful and quite a bit bigger/heavier.

I think Eddie meant that it was a Pug Gearbox at the mo Moonshine mate, not that it's a Pug engine.

Current MINIs have a Getrag box - German?
Earlier ones (ONE & Cooper) had a Rover box.

your mini tech doesn't know his asre from his elbow then, it is definately a midlands (rover) gearbox in the pre-facelift models, moving to a Getrag in the later models.

actually, come to think about it, i'm sure that the gearbox change happened sometime in late 2003 / 2004, prior to the facelift model coming out, but i would be open to correction on this one.

I wouldn't worry too much, I think the Midlands gearbox has a much nicer feel to it than the Getrag 'box, which is pretty notchy by comparison.

The pre-facelift Rover gearbox was/is built to an original Peugeot design

The rover box in my last Cooper was nicer to use, but the Getrag box makes it go much better :p  (lower ratios)

Agree entirely with Duncan - its either that or the red & Black paint :)
