View Full Version : Supercharger on a COOPER

My car has started to whine between 2000 and 6000 revs in 2nd and 3rd gears. The noise sounds a bit like a loud supercharger.

I had a new gearbox installed 1000 miles ago so I'm pretty sure that is the problem. Also ther are small oil spots on the driveshaft next to the gear box and the noise goes away when the clutch is pressed down.

Has anyone else ad this? Do you think it is the gearbox?

It's more likely to be the release bearing

right. There are a few issues surrounding this.

Firstly, the bolt which seals the gearbox oil filler hole is missing so possible leakage of oil.

However the evidence does point to a clutch issue.

HERES A QUESTION. I had my Gbox replaced 1000 miles ago. Jc also chaged out the clutch for me and although im not entirely sure what the release bearing does (i have a fair idea from the name) im informed it should have been replaced at the same time.

I had a look at the JC worksheet and it just says 'clutch kit'. God knows what that is.

Its going to JC tomorrow so ill know more then.

Rev the engine to about 1,500 rpm, lightly pressure in the clutch pedal, the noise should disappear once the release bearing is put under load, you don't need to fully depress the clutch pedal

Ok its not the release bearing. Its the inner bearings of the gearbox. 2nd and 3rd are goosed so its a replacement gearbox. Shame this one only lasted 1000 miles!

I dont agree:blackeye:

The release bearing is stationary until you press the clutch;)

Its going to be the bearing on the imput shaft;):)
