I think these are pretty useful.
First up, this is the Scottish Traffic site, lists all current roadworks and incidents. Also has the feeds from most of the cameras.

This is the one for England and Wales, and is SO much better. My favourite aspect is this one:

Click on a region, Birmingham is always good, and you get lots of icons. One of which is a speedo showing the current average speed of traffic in both directions. Useful, but not so handy unless you can get the info while actually IN the car :cool:
