While Lenore and I were on our Hols Neil and Lorna have been busy sorting out the route. The four of us carried out a final recce of the route today and it is fantastic.

After lunch its off to Holy Island to descend on a pub for a final gathering and chat.:D

Lots of fantastic roads in-between, of course!:D:D

Sure! The more the merrier.

It's looking like the 9th is going to be the day chosen as it suits us best and is the day the majority have gone for. Making a final decision on it at the weekend. Meantime, I'll stick your name down without a day on it.

We are leaving Tweedbank at about 8.40am. Not sure what time Neil & Lorna will be leaving Earlston but I think they will be going up the A68 anyway. We are going up the A7 :D so I guess it depends on which road you like better as to who you follow up.

A7 or A68:question:

As there's no specific venue been booked for lunch we don't need actual numbers, however it would be nice to know if the "maybe's" are still "maybe's" or if they've changed to "sorry, definitely can't make it's" or "good news.. I'll be there after all".:D

quote:Looking forward to seeing your car again. I'd like to see under the "hood" to see if your strut brace covers the ECU compartment. Thinking of a strut brace but we need access to the ECU compartment if we need to take our dastek "Chip" out.
Had a quick look and the Strut brace does appear to go across the top of the ECU compartment with about 10mm clearance, access must be ok as when car goes in for service BMW tech's sometimes need access to ECU.
Car going in again next week to get next new roof so i will ask then.

MartinSullivan
9th October 2005, 06:48 PM
An average BMW tech would have no need to access the ECU through the engine bay - their computer connects via the port under the steering column. Andy needs access as his piggback module is located in there. My strut brace is attached to the strut towers and then the brace itself is held to the collars attached to the strut towers by four bolts - which can be removed in about 1 minute. I'll take pictures when I get back to Aberdeen.

Another great run from the "Border Reavers" and equally superb pictures from Duncan. Excellent bacon butties, fish supper and a nice guinness to finish off.

I definitely think a combination of the last two runs could become "an annual must" on the NMS callander. You guys really know the borders! Lots of people missed out today, but it was nice to see some new faces.

Andy, pictures from Lindsay are great; Neil's got a new screen saver.:D:cool: Don't know how we didn't get wet. Must be the large brim on me "flat cap":clown:
If it's not too much bother, would be interested to know how you / Lindsay posted the smaller pictures, with the option the save the "big file". I find reducing the file size, hosting the pictures on Mini2.com and then linking to a post, a lot of hassle and very hit and miss.
Duncan, any suggestions as you always post very quickly and it appears, without any fuss!! Any help appreciated.

Hi Malcolm,

I use the software which came with my camera to do a "batch resize" to drop the size of the pics down to a "thumbnail" type size. Then I uploaded all the pics - the thumbnails and the large pics - to my own web space which I pay for. Then I link either the actual picture (thumbnail) or a URL to the full size pic, for folks to download from.

Like you, I find MINI2 a bit cumbersome, so I only tend to upload a couple of pics now and then to that site. Sometimes it even rejects the pic for no apparent reason.

I know the above is still fairly technical but it's difficult to simplify it much more. Best thing to do is have a look at the features on the software which came with your camera; it would normally have a "batch resize" or "group resize" option. To use this you would normally select all the pictures you want to resize (remember to use copies, you don't want to resize your originals) then click the "batch resize" button/menu option. Normally it will give you options on what size you want to change the file to. Select what size you want, click "go/start etc". It will then resize all the pics you have chosen one at a time. Hey presto!

Give me a shout if you need any help in figuring this out.

Andy

Andy, that is a great help. I will look at my software in more detail. I know it has a "free" web host for me, think it is called "Snapfish". I assume you "crop" and "paint out" the number plates before you "batch resize"? Will spend more time on it tomorrow. Thanks for your help.

To be honest, I don't bother. But I know Duncan Stewart does. I understand the thinking behind it, but when you look at how much information on everyone is in the public domain already I tend to think blanking out reg numbers is like plugging a leaking dam with a sticky plaster. Just IMHO.

Glad I could help though.:D

I use free software called "easy thumbnails" (can be downloaded from www.download.com or similar)
This easily & quickly shrinks a group of photos to any size / resolution you require. I used to put on thumbnails and link to a bigger picture which works really nicely but takes a bit of time to set up. I find if I shrink jpegs to 600 by 400 at high quality this works fine for displaying on the net.
I'm always happy to send anyone full size copies - just let me know your e-mail address.
I use photoshop to do any cropping or number plate blurs (smudge tool) after shrinking simply because it works quicker on the smaller image.
Not too bothered about my number plate appearing on the net but I know it some people on NMS had problems (cloned plates) so I always do it.
Hope this helps

Andy, Duncan, thanks for your help. Duncan, I have downloaded "easy thumbnails and it is very easy to use. Where do you host your pictures before adding the url in NMS? Do you use mini2.com

Malcolm, we discourage folk from consuming MINI2's bandwidth by using their gallery to host photos linked to on here. Paul provides that space primarily for use within that site and it tends to pi$$ people off if they feel that their bandwidth is being misused.

Others take note!! (BDM!!););)

There are loads of free photo hosting sites on the net that you can use if your own ISP does not provide you with space for this. I can't personally recommend any as I haven't tried any but I see Brian has been using http://fotopic.net/ which seems to work ok. Google will no doubt list loads of others.:)

Photobucket (www.photobucket.com) is another good one that is easy to use.

The use of the MINI2 galleries has been mentioned a few times before. It hasn't caused any problems up till now but as there are so many free sites which offer this facility it really is no big deal to use one of these rather than MINI2.

I only mentioned you specifically cos this thread (http://www.newminiscotland.co.uk/snitzforums/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=5778) is fresh in my mind and has loads of pics hosted on MINI2.:( I know some others are equally guilty! I think most people used MINI2 when this site started but it's time for it to stop. Yer sig is still on MINI 2 as well. I suggest you move it!:)

Gaj, leave me out of the argument please. 8):II use mini2.com the same as I use the NMS website. I do not abuse either, or anyone else for that matter. I try to post pictures on both sites which I hope are topical; this will always be subjective!! I never have more than 6 topical pictures on the site at any time, which appears to be "par for the course.
As it happens, with help from Andy, Duncan, Martin and our own Nellie, I am a little bit more clued up on "photo posting" subject.
Anyway it’s Photo bucket sorted and I’m off to Tenerife for a week, with no intention of offending anyone!!:D
