Depends on the number really.
Something personal to you only wont really accumulate value, same with Irish plates. They're ten a penny.
Pick one up at one of the DVLA autions, and you might get a bargain.

KJ, I have always bought direct from DVLA, as I was happy with something simple. (Bit like myself) J2 SVF cost £250 and was an original with the car. G2MJF and H2NSF were about £350. Last year Claire's N2CRF was £450, so they do go up in value, but not by a massive amount. As you can tell, I like the idea.
There are 2 in Edinburgh, 50BER and Pub 1 which must be worth a bomb.

Although mine is an irish plate, it's a bit dearer as it can look like a name! I got mine for my 21st and to get the no. ending in 21 was £1500:eek: so I went for the 29 cause my b-day is on the 29th, it was a mere £450:disapprove:
Rob's plate was £750, but then the 964 makes it type specific! My neighbour has R5 HOT on retention (he had a focus rs about 4 cars ago, which was approx. 7 months ago!!:p)
I would recommend having a wee trawl through www.newreg.com they're pretty good and quite helpful too!:clown:

can u buy plates and not assign em to a car? like buy one and put it on retention, i take it that the plate can just be on its own and not on a car.

I've had TH02RNE on retention for several months now but come Tuesday it will be on our Scooby:D
Think you have a yearly charge if you keep the number on retention and not on a motor.
I was wanting F1ONA but at a cost of £80,000.00 dinae think i'll bother.

I didnt think it was much, £25 or £40 rings a bell.
I have mine on retention just now, but will probably have it back on the MINI when the 55 plates come out :D
Best plate i've ever seen is AUD1

KJ,
I believe they hold their money *IF* you can find someone who wants it ;)
I've got/had a few - Y 40 OHP (looked like Y 400HP on my old M5) & R 666 TYP (on our old Civic Type R) but no-one wanted them once they/we parted company with the cars.
Still got N5 5COT, that's on my bike - paid £250 for it in '95 and saw M55COT for sale last year for £2k - fingers crossed!
Putting SC03TTC on my new car on Tuesday. Owned that number from new as well - think it was £450 from DVLA.
I think retention is £80, but don't quote me on it :dead:
What are you thinking about getting fella?

i'm thinking about something to do with my profession rather than my initials or name, just so that its a bit easier to sell in the future.

KJ, retention cert costs £25 for a year. When you buy from the DVLA, if the price is £250 (for example) this includes your £80 assignment fee. This means that whenever you want to put the plate on a car, there is no additional costs (apart from getting the actual plates made) If you buy from newreg.com (as Julz recommended) remember that their price does not include the £80 assignment fee that the DVLA will charge for assigning it to a car. You can keep a plate as long as you want, only if you continue to retain the number by paying £25 each year to extend you "entitlement". I have bought all my registrations from DVLA as they are the cheapest and I have found, very helpful. As with anything, buy the best and most expensive you can afford and it WILL hold it's value. A friend of mine bought JAG999 about 15 years ago for £200 and is now worth over £50k !
