Just noticed the other day that the wee bell shaped bits that hold my spots on are looking very rusty!!:( Didnt notice how bad they were when I picked her up but I've only had her about 5 weeks so they must have been "on the turn" before I got her!!  Not sure whether to go back to the garage or what!! Anyone any ideas?? Is this the norm?? Is there something I can paint on to stop it getting worse?? Sorry I know being a complete girl as usual!! :I

kirsty,

I'd be taking the car back pal - I can't imagine the garage having much of a grumble about it. And I wouldn't be trying to cover the rust up until the garage seen it either.

Must add though, why would anyone make a spot light bracket in mild steel? Stainless steel is so cheap nowadays it's barely worth the difference.

Or maybe it's just a way of making us buy replacement brackets every couple of years??

Cheers!

Scott

Well I'm past the spots age :p, but take the car back ...I'm on my second set in about four months or so ...brackets first then the lights, due to water ingress -just flash your eyes at them ,as Scott said , the brackets are in steel and cheap and nasty.

i've noticed rust on the undersides of my spots but not on the brackets themselves, i reckon i can use a wire brush to get rid of that and treat em a little.

Kirsty, i have to agree and say to take the car to the garage and stand firm. They'll not have any reason to doubt it or deny you new brackets / spots :)

Take it back!!! They shouldn't rust after 5 weeks! Flash whatever you need to at 'em and they'll cave. If that doesn't work just make a lot of noise!

I heard the spots were bad for rust but that is ridiculous - rust from new in 5 weeks! Take them back and insist they change them.
Surely just a bit of brushed on paint after fitting would stop this? The other option would be to grease them regularly but this is messy.

Thank you guys!! Well as the general consensus is to go back to the garage then that is what I'll do!! I was going to do that but didn't know if I was being a bit over protective!! I'll flash my spots at them Col, too cold for anything else!! HEE HEE!! ;) I'll let you know how I get on!!

That is ridiculous, I bought Lucas sealed beam spot and fog lamps in about 1972 and they are now on my brother's classic mini and despite being out in all weather they are not rusted yet!

They just don't make them like they used to, do they! Bet they only cost a tanner too.;)

Have you had to replace the mantles yet?:clown:

I had a set of brackets made up in aluminium by Prepfab. They are a rally preparations firm. See them at www.prepfab.co.uk
I sent them a sketch and dimensions and they made them up for me. I needed something more robust than the BMW items as I wanted to fit larger, non BMW lamps. They then only required some minor modifications to fit low enough to the top of the bumper to allow the bonnet to close normally. I have been testing them on the road car (see pic)and will use them on the rally car later on when required.

Ok, so no photo. Just spent the last age trying to work out if/how to do it. I know the question/answer of how to do it is in here somewhere but b******d if I can find it. So close your eyes tightly and imagine a pair of Cibie size spotlamps on a Cooper S........thats what I have got!:)

Cheers

Thanks Kirsty. If it hadn't been for this thread I wouldn't have thought to check the brackets on mine. I spotted rust on one this morning so went to JC. Am getting two new spotlights and the brackets changed on Monday. Strangely enough its my new spots that have to get changed (just a few weeks old) rather than the originals which are five months. Have to say absolutely no problem with JC. Service par excellence!:D:D:D:D

Redpoint, You have gallery space on Mini2 that you can use - as long as you dont abuse it too much :p, or sign up with a free picture hosting company such as Fotango.

They appear very stable but I hadnt got the chance to wire them up prior to the collision with the deer!! The car is currently being repaired so will get them wired after that and report back, then I'll know for sure.

cheers!
