Im a Windows based software/web developer, hence my view on Macs :mad: (Ducks and runs for cover :D)

They are good machines but I think their un-willingness to allow others to build hardware keeps the machines price inflated above their real value coupled with their low usage rate makes them a costly pain to support for developers, hence I don't.

OS X looks interesting but that is really just Linux with a different GUI.

Hi Woz, I'm a Mac & Windows developer - though I write all the Windows stuff on my Mac as well.
Anyway, didn't mean this to turn into a which is best, because everyone has strong opinions one way or the other, just idle curiousity and I think Calum has answered my question with the 30-35% figure, which is very high by normal standards for some reason.

Yep, I was trying to avoid getting drawn in to a flame war on that subject as it always gets out of hand. Hope it came across that way :)

30% is very high IMHO, the industry stats are normally about

Windows 93%, Mac 2%, Other 5% (Includes Linux + other)

This means that a large number of Mini owners use Macs or you and Calum spend all day checking if there are any new posts on the site :cool:

I've got an iPod too and I ordered an iTrip from Griffin ages ago but I'm still waiting for it to arrive! It will probably be crap anyway. I might have to fit a bigger aerial on to the car to get decent reception! It cost me $94.99 for a Powerpod car adapter and the iTrip which includes $40 for the shipping:eek:

I am quite clearly off my rocker:clown:

It looks :cool: though!

Apple have the trademarked the letter "i" don't you know;)

It started with iMac (i for Internet I think). It has now been applied to all of Apple's 'Digital Life' products like the applications iTunes, iMovie, iDVD, iPhoto ... you name it. Just a clever brand identity plan.:)

Im running an original shape , graphite imac , with a 120gb hard drive and 384mb ram , and osx jaguar.

Also use macs for my job, working in a printers digital prepress dept :D

In fact I am sure Willie would find a Mac very handy for ripping his CD's and organising his mp3s. The iTunes integration with the iPod is amazing!!:cool:

I'm not sure how it works on windaes.:evil:

Right Linda here goes: Its a portable music player (battery powered) - it can store thousands of tunes so you can have all of your favourite albums with you. You can take your Music CDs and convert them on your computer to this compressed format called MP3, then they can be transferred to the MP3 player from the computer.

Normally you have to plug in headphones to listen to the MP3 Player, but it is also possible to play it through your car's audio system and I guess that is what Willie plans to do eventually.

Thought it would be right up your street being into music and concerts as we know.:cool:

Fortunately I've sneaked the cheque book, credit card, etc. out of the house with me ;)

Here's a deal then Linda. You buy yourself a Mac (with your own money), then buy all your own software (my PC stuff won't work on it) and then call the Mac helpline (3GGG, Gaj & Macblob, oh and Monsta too) anytime you're having problems with it :approve::)

Ha-ha.. that'll teach you guys :p:clown::D

I suspect that they are not illegal to sell or buy - just to use!

I don't think -any- transmitter for the Band II FM band is legal to use in the UK no matter how low powered.

Its probably just a milliwatt or 2 that they use because if we walked about 25 yards away we lost the signal.

Yep, probably because of this:-

Illegal devices
Under the WT Act, it is an offence to use and install apparatus that does not comply with the R&TTE Regulations 2000, SI 2000 No. 730 and the relevant UK Radio InterfaceRequirement (unless it was type-approved before 8 April 2000).

It is also an offence to possess or have in your control such a device with intent to use it, or knowing that another person is likely to use it, contrary to the WT Act.

The maximum penalty for each of these offences is a £5,000 fine and/or six months' imprisonment on summary conviction, or an unlimited fine and/or two years' imprisonment on conviction on indictment. The Courts may also order you to forfeit any wireless telegraphy apparatus or any other apparatus, vehicle, vessel or aircraft.

Ive got it on my imac

My firewire web cam works on yahoo messenger but it doesnt seem to like it on ichat using an aim account

maybe i need to have a .mac account for it to work

not to sure as i havent really used it yet.

Roll on Panther and a new G5 would be nice if anyone wants to buy me one:)

Which iMac model do you have? You need at least a 600MHz G3 or any G4 for video with the beta of iChat AV:( (You also need broadband for video)

The AIM account will work exactly the same as a .mac account.

If you want to try an audio chat sometime let me know.

Only just got my iTrip and look what I just read -

I have now defected from the fold of "windaes" and moved over to the white side. Now have a very shiny custom built G4 iBook with built in bluetooth and airport extreme. Its very nice!! (when I get to use it!):)

The Apples are better but they'll never be mainstream.

I specced PC for our office but could have gone for Macs but if they hadn't worked I'd would have been in the Doo Doo. So took the 'normal' MS office/PC route.

Brilliant machine as well H, my neighbour has one and keeps trying to convert me to it ,alas I bought the 'windows/office' Toshiba with Wi-Fi when in the US and still have the miles of cable from the telephone point (dial up)!!!!,there must be a wee box or something that will do the trick .

Angus - I've got the WiFi Tosh also. I've just installed a wireless broadband set up it's really easy. Just get your phone line converted to Broadband then buy a combo DSL modem/router/access point plug in connect and you're away. It's that easy!

If you've not got broadband or don't want it you can get a bluetooth modem, will probably cost the same as the BB set up though.
