View Full Version : Bakewell Tour 5th-8th May 2020

Magoo
17th May 2019, 08:27 PM
It’s been a week since we’ve come back so let’s plan next year!

Location: Peak District
Dates: Tuesday 5th - Friday 8th May 2020

The place I’ve found is a self catering converted village pub, there are 17 bedrooms over the 4 cottages on the grounds, we have secure parking for approx. 20 cars, an outside area with enough space for 34 people along with a BBQ. They have a bar area with a pool table and darts board - I can see Crombers all over the bar already.

The price would be £250 per room, if all 17 rooms aren’t filled then the price would go up slightly to compensate. The £250 would include a BBQ one night (the food would be provided we need to cook it lol) I’d need an non refundable deposit of £75as we need to pay part to secure the place.

Link to the place - https://www.peakvenues.co.uk/venues/3/crewe-harpur/#about

The rest is to be paid no later than 12 weeks before so the remaining £175 would be need to be paid to me no later than the end of January however, I’ll accept payment of the remaining £175 at any time up to that point. I don’t want to be asking for lots of money just after Christmas so if it easier to pay in October for example I’m happy for that.

With regards to the self catering, I’d ask for an amount (£10/£15) per person and would get a delivery of bacon / sausages / rolls / fresh juices etc for the kitchen. Myself and Christina have already said we would be happy to cook the bacon and sausage rolls for breakfast and I’m sure others would help. There is also multiple restaurants that all deliver to the location for the other evening meals. It would be BYOB with alcohol and juice, this would be asked for nearer the time.

Myself and William plan on going down at some point and working out routes etc and provide an intinary closer to the event.

So who wants to go?

1. William and Megan PAID IN FULL
2. Brian and Christina PAID IN FULL
3. Andrew PAID IN FULL
4. Ali, Laura and Arwen PAID IN FULL
5.
6.
7. Matt PAID IN FULL
8. Crombers and Karen PAID IN FULL
9. David and Fiona PAID IN FULL
10. Elfman PAID IN FULL
11. Ferg and Lou PAID IN FULL
12. Hutch PAID IN FULL
13. T PAID IN FULL
14. Alistair PAID IN FULL
15.Mom fossy PAID IN FULL
16. James and Sharlee PAID IN FULL
17.

Missed out on heartbeat tour for the last couple of years due to various reason but would be up for this one (given I have a year to prepare!)

Also does accommodation have somewhere I can charge the car (or a three pin plug with easy access to a window?

The 2 smaller cottages have shared bathrooms, 1 has 2 rooms with a shared bathroom and 1 has 3 bedrooms with a shared bathroom. All other 12 rooms have en suites. Myself and William, Brian and Christina and Andrew don’t mind being in the 3 bed cottage and sharing a bathroom though. If anyone else doesn’t mind please let me know

Given the tradition of everyone taking the piss out of each other on these trips and them being named after a TV show, maybe this one should be “Peaky Winders” [emoji85]

Might be a bit dark though.

It’s got to be Bakewell either preceded or followed by another word or two...

The Sneaky Peaks Ramble is the one I called it when I sent my deposit to William.

Cannae beat a Bakewell tart, I am going to try and make a holiday of it as well, sister and brother in law stay in Sheffield so will prob visit them after tour, from what I remember of Bakewell when my sister in law took us it was a lovely place but I need to sample a Bakewell tart in Bakewell.

Things to invest in are roof bars and roof box for the tour.

Andrew, William and myself are just back from doing some prep for Bakewell so I thought a wee update was in order. Below is a rough guide and all run notes etc will be provided on the morning, we will be leaving from Abington Services at 10am so if everyone can meet from half9 that would be great.

Tuesday

- Travel down with a lunch stop at Huntleys
- After settled, drive to Bakewell for dinner - fish and chips, pub grub, Italian etc whatever anyone fancies

Wednesday

- Run day
- evening at venue - BBQ (put Crombers bar skills to test)

Thursday

- Drive to activity - Chatsworth House; price to follow, trying to get a deal
- Evening surprise activity including 2 course meal - £28

I hope you all like the run through of events and will enjoy, my next task is the food shop! Mom fossy is very excited to help with that though

I’m a bit AWOL from NMS these days due to various things, but I haven’t forgotten about you and I’m totally looking forward to next May!

ps I think we should have a whip-round and get Crombers an official NMS Barman’s apron!
pps Is my sig thing all blurry or have my eyes gone again...?

It’s blurry because photoshop has changed. Upload it to Flickr

Here’s a wee point of interest for any NMS Musos (pay attention T!). The CD/Vinyl pop-up shop in the Glasgow Royal Concert Hall during Celtic Connections is run by “Music in the Green”, who are based in Water Street... Bakewell! It’s obviously mainly Folk stuff, but I think they have quite a varied selection. I’ll be having a look if we have time! They don’t appear to have a website, but are on Twitter. Here’s their blurb: 'Music in the Green is a traditional independent record shop in Bakewell at the heart of the Derbyshire Peak District. We stock primarily folk, acoustic, world, blues, Americana, classic and prog rock vinyl and CD’s although occasionally venture into other genres”.

This service has been brought to you by ELFnews, and now the Weather. It’s crap.

Time certainly does fly!

94 days til we go, we’ve updated the first page and as you can see we’re down 3 rooms. At this point we have no BBQ on the Wednesday night, I’ll leave this for you to decide.. do you want to just do your own thing on the Wednesday or we all pay £20 instead of £10 and Christina, Mom and myself will get BBQ stuff as well as breakfast things.

A rough itinerary for the few days is as follows, we’ll provide packs with run notes and relevant information on the morning off - we’ll need the run notes this year!

Tuesday - 10am meet at Abington for an approx. 10.30am leave
- lunch at Huntley’s
- arrive around 3pm
- drive into Bakewell for wonder and dinner

Wednesday - main run
- evening TBC (BBQ etc)

Thursday - activity
- evening surprise, prompt start at 6pm includes a 2 course meal. Will be revealed on the day

Just to update everyone as I’ve had a few PM’s wondering what our plans are for Bakewell with the recent outbreak of Covid 19. At this point we haven’t heard anything from the venue about there position and wanting to cancel. Our plans are to continue to monitoring the situation closer to the time and take action if needed then. The risk of potential infection we feel is low due to everyone being in their own rooms and their own cars for the majority of the time while we are away and everyone is aware of the official guidelines from the government on hygiene and how to reduce infection and this should be well established by May. We will continue to listen to government guidelines and take any further action if it is deemed necessary.

We will however understand completely if any individuals feel it necessary to pull of Bakewell due to the Covid 19 outbreak and we wish everyone the best during this period of unrest. Stay safe

ELFMAN
23rd March 2020, 12:25 PM
I don’t want to rain on our parade, but you’ve guessed it, I’m going to drizzle slightly. I have to be completely honest and say I think it’ll be a miracle if things are anywhere near ok by May - or June or July for that matter. Hopefully the virus will peak (but how high?) and level off in the next few weeks, and maybe lessen in the period afterwards, but nobody’s sure. The full extent of Coronavirus hasn’t hit us yet.

I’m not saying we should cancel the trip immediately, we should if possible wait for the venue to decide, as any decision we make unilaterally could have financial implications for us, but that’s not my main concern. Even if we could figure out a way to go/stay safely, what about local supplies of food, access to amenities and places to visit etc? We’ve also seen in the past few days locals’ serious & genuine concerns in rural Wales and the Scottish Highlands & Islands of ‘incomers’ bringing the virus with them and overloading their already precarious local health & provisions infrastructure, so that has to be considered very carefully.

I’d like nothing better, especially with the insane ‘cooped-up’ (apologies for the Mini pun) way I’m feeling now, than to be spending quality time away with my NMS buddies, but I think we have to be realistic and accept that there’s only a ridiculously slim chance that we’ll get away in May. I’m really sorry if folks think I’m being overly negative and a ‘Doom-Monger’, but I can’t realistically pretend things can go ahead even with additional precautions. I’d SO like to be proved wrong, believe me, but that’s how I feel.

Hopefully we’ll all come through this in one piece and we’d be able to come to a mutually beneficial financial agreement with the venue and rearrange the trip for a later date when we can all relax in safety and enjoy ourselves in the traditional NMS manner.

DigitalLemming
23rd March 2020, 01:34 PM
I have to agree with you Elfman, and while I hope that this has passed by May, realistically it looks like it won’t be, at this time I think we keep things as they are, if the venue wants to cancel and refund that is a decision for them. As a group we can take a look at this closer to the time and keep hoping for the best at the moment as I’m sure we all are anyway.

ELFMAN
23rd March 2020, 02:28 PM
Agreed, despite my ‘Heavy’ post, I have absolutely everything crossed all the time, which causes its own set of problems... The main thing is that we all stay safe and use our common sense, look after one another and get through this, which I’m sure we will. As the old George Harrison song says: “All Things Must Pass”

The general lockdown for all of us runs until the Easter weekend at the moment, depending on whats happening at that time they'll re-evaluate and I would suspect extend it further.

At the moment, cross fingers and hope for the best, we'll take things as they come.

Magoo
24th March 2020, 12:11 PM
It’s a minimum of 3 weeks lockdown to see if they get a handle on it. I haven’t heard from the venue as of yet, I’ll leave it til Easter when the government are looking at if we continue on the lockdown. Nobody will be in the offices for where we’re going but when i know anything, you will. It’s a very unsettling time for people and I for one just want everyone to stay safe and well, if Bakewell doesn’t happen then it doesn’t happen.

I’m currently not at work as considered vulnerable and I’m sure this will be affecting other households, everyone stay positive and if you need a FaceTime call with my amazing chat then let me know!! Haha

Afternoon all,

To keep everyone informed I’ve been in contact with the people who manage the venue. Everyone who has a booking at one of their places in the next 12 weeks was required to fill in a form and they will only deal with the lead traveler, I believe they’ve been getting some nasty emails from people who don’t seem to understand everyone is affected. They are then looking at what can be done for each separate booking

Hope your all well!

Thanks Megan. You’ve done all you can under these extraordinary circumstances, I hope we can rearrange the trip (or any trip) at some point, but as has been said, there are more important upcoming events for you to think about!

As for the venue getting “pelters” from people who are presumably upset at missing their holiday, some eejits STILL don’t seem to have grasped the severity of the situation, they’re probably the types who were/are still flocking to the countryside at the weekends, spreading the virus and cleaning out village shops... I know it’s bad news for us, but the entire Tourism industry (and many others) is going to do well just to survive the loss of business, so I’m sparing a thought for their predicament.

In the meantime, all we can do is Stay at Home, Support our fantastic NHS (and all the other vital workers who are keeping the country afloat), and by doing that we’re literally saving lives. There’ll be plenty of time to enjoy each others company and our magic wee motors when this horrible episode is over. Stay Safe everybody!

Hi guys, hope your all well and keeping safe! I’m watching the news like I’m sure most of you are, obviously with the further 3 weeks on complete lockdown takes us to the end of the week we’re away so Bakewell Tour is most confidently not happening.
