My son is hoping to buy a Mini Cooper 2007, what are common faults to look for to prevent him buying a faulty car?

Oil use! Wish I’d researched more before I bought my R56 but oil use is a big issue, certainly was with mine! 1.0 litres of oil every 500 miles is not a cheap habit to maintain.

Try stay away from the n14 engine the N18 is a much better spec

Cooper wise look for normal things eg water leaks from cooling system ,does the car drive well and pulls cleanly when accelerating, does the brake pedal feel good and pulls up evenly and is there any service history of routine servicing and any parts that have been replaced or any strange noises

Cooper doesn’t have an N14 so your fine with that. The Cooper is daily bullet proof. Check for normal things, signs of rust wear and tear items but for engine I’ve not had any issues or heard of anyone having issues.
