View Full Version : Mini 60 at GTM - 25th August

Mon the fish
15th February 2019, 12:49 PM
On Sunday 25 August, the Grampian Transport Museum are hosting an event to celebrate 60 years of the Mini.

Already confirmed are a Mini van, a 998cc Cooper, a 1071 Cooper S, and a 1293 cc Janspeed Cooper S at the fast end of things from the BMC era; along with an Outspan orange Mini and a Mini Nessie from the one off spectrum and promises of a championship winning BMW era JCW Mini.

It is likely that John Clark will attend, with one of the anniversary specials if possible; it is hoped that test drives may be on offer although that is very much up to them. Also being discussed is the possibility of something like an auto-test on the museum’s track, although this is very much TBC at this stage.

The museum are keen to capture data for each vehicle, as they’d like 60 different variants of Mini on the day and be able to speak to their owners to find out more about their cars – so it’s best if each member registers individually. They can however allocate space for a club stand/presence if requested – entrants should mention the club (i.e. NMS) on the entry form.

There is free entry to the event for all Minis and complimentary admission to the museum for Mini entrants on the day. If you’ve never been to the museum, you really are missing out – the museum is a fabulous thing to visit, has won lots of awards, and a third of the exhibits are changed each year; so even if you’ve been before, chances are it’s a lot different now. Think of making a weekend of it and possibly visiting the Moray Motor Museum as well – they prepare historic racers for events at Goodwood etc, and is well worth a visit if you’re in the area.

A road run on the Saturday or Sunday morning, ending at GTM before the public is due to be admitted is being mooted – possibly a run from Ballindalloch Castle over the Lecht to Alford. For all you Sassenachs who have never been beyond the end of the country’s motorway network :p you could be in for a treat – the Lecht is a fabulous, unmissable section of road.

Trade stands – tuners/parts suppliers/retailers will be invited to attend. If anyone has suggestions as to who may want to take part, please let me know and I’ll pass it on.

Also, if a pre-event drive (organised by the museum) is of interest can you say on here please - we need numbers to justify it. I'm sure I can provide some space on my drive to get your car shiny again before the show!

My insurance states:

Use on the Nürburgring Nordschleife, or for racing, pacemaking,
competitions, rallies, track days, trials or speed tests either on
a road, track, or at an off road 4x4 event or where the type of
use is shown as excluded under the above heading "Permitted
Use".

so unfortunately it looks like i wont be able to take part in the parade :(

Mon the fish

A lot of it is related to the fatality on the track, and the insurance response to it.

This is happening throughout the insurance industry. We discussed this issue last month, and we suspect that more and more car shows will find it harder to get insurance for an event, and pass the liability on to the participants.

We live in a risk averse, litigation culture and I believe that in a few years car shows won't be what they used to be

It's sad we've come to this, I'd understand if I was competing in a sprint or a track day, but it would never occur to me that there would be an issue for a parade lap.

How many of us went on the parade lap at Knockhill a few months ago?

Twisterboy
18th June 2019, 10:16 PM
Going to check with my insurance, mine will say the same I would guess. Is there any way if we got confirmation from insurer we will be covered for a parade lap in writing this would be suitable.

Or can we just take out a days track insurance??

Checked with my insurance company today, Hastings direct.

The exclusions say I'm not covered for track use, but they confirmed that for a parade lap, normal driving, not racing..... I'm covered. This is a result, as I know someone with Privilege so got told she's not covered.

Coming up over Glenshee is a decent route too....

Tip for everyone coming up, if you come up the A90 remember to turn off at Stonehaven and take the AWPR to Westhill, that shaves a good bit off the journey.

As mentioned above, due to my slightly crap organising I'm running the Aberdeen 10k in the morning so I'm going to be dropping my car off before 9, and I'll be back about half 1 at a guess. See you all then.

Anyone wanting to use my driveway & products to wash their car, they're still more than welcome to. I'm leaving the house at 9am to head into Aberdeen, as long as you're here before then I'll leave you with my garage plipper and you can crack on. I'll get the plipper back off you early afternoon. I can setup power washers, snow foam etc for you coming.

Anyone wanting to do this, drop me a PM and I'l give you my address and phone number.

I really enjoyed today, I left home and discovered the A93 was only 10 mins longer than the a90 and there's no speed cameras it was a no brainer. So I went that way in both directions, love that road!! The show itself was well organised and a nice relaxed day, it wasn't perfect but it was a nice day and heard comments that it was better than the MINI at Home show.

Well it was nice having a show less than 3 hours from home for a change. With Ali, Laura and Arwen coming up yesterday we made a weekend of it and went for an Indian after Ali had tasted just about every delicacy that was on offer on the way to the restaurant.

The show itself was well attended, well organised and there plenty to see. As Ali mentioned it was heavily biased toward the classics especially in the parade where there was a good selection of modern minis and not one of them was pulled over for an owner interview. It was good to see the shear variety of minis that there was I dare say I didn't notice any 2 that were identical.

Fantastic day well worth the 7 hour round trip to get there.

As said it did tend to focus more on the classic Mini but nice selection of Modern Minis on show as well, the comperes were ok but felt the sound good have been better.

I found my driving road on the way back the B744 what a cracking road, on the way up I was taking it easy but wow nice clear day on way back and wow.

I've been away on a MINI jolly this past week (more later), so only just back on....

Well worth the 5 minute trek for me, road run before the show was fun, and Mark and Kris following on behind looked great in the mirrors. Good effort to the other NMS'ers who made the run up.

The classic bias continued in the feature in the motoring supplement of the P&J on Wednesday, only the John Clark cars pictured in the Italian Job scene. I had kinda hoped in the parade lap that as the only R55 there I might get a quick chat, but denied :hand:

Nice pic Alasdair btw, that's Marischal College, 2nd largest granite building in the world. :thumbs up:

Yeah I was a bit miffed at how classic centric it was even to the point of the classic owners downing to late built "real minis". The road run views were nice but imo the speed was just too low. I wasnt expecting the classics to be flat out but the speed limit would have at least been nice. The fact we were actually holding up a tractor says something about the pace.

The Trustee who organised this is a classic owner, so it was always going to be biased towards them but even so, I agree with the comments on here about how we were maybe overlooked a bit.

At the AGM last week, someone from the Aberdeen Mini group suggested to me we make this a yearly event. Any thoughts on this, would folk be up for it? What improvements (ignoring the classic bias lol) would make it a yearly hit?
