Broken AC

So the sun eventually decides to come out in Edinburgh and I turn on the AC on the way home this evening. Theres a loud continuous noise as if it's trying to do something but there no cold air.

Can anyone advise what may have broken? By the way I've got a R56 cooper S.

Was it working normally the last time you used it Eg no noises ?

Now that you mention it there was a bit of noise the last few times I used it. Do you think it could be the compressor? Only had the car 4 weeks!
