Hello.. it's my 11th Anniversary next week, which is steel apparently - So I've bought my wife a wee surprise in the shape of an R53. It's a tidy wee car. Wasn't happy with the rattle can job someone had done on the front bumper, so had it resprayed by FozSports in Clackmannan (who is excellent for quality and service btw).. Also had a couple of wee dents eased out that would have bugged me.

It had the insanely terrible brushed aluminium effect dash parts, that I also couldn't have lived with, so I've wrapped them with a textured mat carbon by AiRelease and also done the parts surrounding the door grab rails. I had some left over, and decided to do small carbon cheques on those bits that are like front wings

Just fitted the cannes grille, and have ordered a small vintage cooper badge for it, which is going to look the berries. Other than that.. it's an unspoiled original.

Toyed with the idea of coil overs, but meh.. Toyed with doing the wheels in gloss black, but meh.. It's the dark silver/grey, with gloss black roof, and decided it's probably better all round left standard.

Still to mop/buff the roof to take out some inconsiderate car wash numpty marks, and that just leaves one small rust bubble on the lower back quarter, and the obligatory 2 rust bubbles on the boot lid above the handle.

I'm actually going to tackle these myself with a rattle can and 2k lacquer. If I make a total arse of it, I have until Thursday to rectify it.

Oh.. I also cut and joined the number plate mount, to better fit my cut plates.

I'll try post some pics when I'm done.

I'm Murray btw.

And.. forgot to say the damn squeaks and rattles from the dash!!!! They drive me insane and I've only driven it a mile or two!

I have bought some self adhesive felt tape, and will no doubt have the dash in a thousand parts to find what's rubbing and squeaking, however I fear the answer will be - everything.

One last thing.. I told her I was buying her a new dishwasher :D

Its a gift with benefits ;-)

I actually surprised myself with how it turned out. Although I'm in two minds about attacking the rust. It's a tidy enough car to warrant making it mint, but I'm a joiner, and do all things in wood.. but car body repairs :-/

Welcome along Murray and I'm just over the bridge in Larbert.
Sounds like the usual R53 bits and bobs but I think they make the car what it is now and anyone that knows me knows how I hate rattles or squeaks !
I'd say leave the wee bits of rust at the moment and then get them done properly you'll only end up doing it anyway as I always think these touch up jobs are fine until you start them and then you wish you'd got them done anyway.
I've a couple of bubbles just starting on the tailgate too but I'll live with them for a wee while and get it done later on in the year all going well.
Can't wait to see a few photos ....

Hi there. I am just up the road in Dunfermline. Get the car on a wee bit of a twisty back road and see the grin it puts on your face.

Perfect.. that's exactly the kind of encouragement I was needing. My mate does cracking body repairs, and I'm sure I can talk him into me doing some more joinery work for him that should cover the costs ;-)

Just buff the roof and sort the squeaky dash it is.. any advice on where to start wouldn't go wrong - or.. I've a big roll of felt tape and a workshop if anyone fancies helping and doing their squeaks at the same time?? ;-) ;-) ;-) ;-)

(The lure of squeak free motoring..)

Hi Murray, welcome to NMS. Sounds like a good little runner you have there. Rust and rattles can be fixed, as long as it's solid under the bonnet you're onto a winner!

Look forward to seeing some pictures.

It's the first time I've seen it in daylight.. the carbon in the door cards look like they need a wee trim.

Wrapping panels like that is no easy job so good work on that. I like the carbon checks on the A panels, reminds me of the Checkmate edition which I'm a big fan of.

Cheers.. ended up painting the mirror caps today. They had a few stone chips etc and turned out no bad at all.. in fact, I'm back to thinking I might tackle the rusty spots on the boot lid over the weekend.

LOVE the wee retro Cooper badge. It arrived today, and just so happens to be the exact same size as the gaps in that grille.

I'm thinking of buying another 2, and keeping them to use on some improvised rear mud flaps in the future.. and if I don't, I'm sure I could sell them on here without too much bother.

I'll keep you updated
