Has anyone on here retro fitted digital radio in an r56. And if so was it a lot of hassle or expensive. Any advice is appreciated.

I'm not too sure either how this would work as never had any dealings with R56 model but as a suggestion you could try Mikey at http://newministuff.com he's got a few options open to you on the DAB front ...
