It's that time of year again for Modern MINI Magazines oscars. NewMINIScotland is needing to defend our crown. Voting is a little different this year and is being done via Facebook and commenting on the the relevant post. Can I ask for everyone, if you haven't already to post for NMS on the ModernMINI Facebook page

Done .. Although not happy as not everyone has FB to do this ! Think it's playing into the hands of those that are FB groups over anything else.

Done. I also agree with comments posted that it's essentially turned into a numbers game rather than voted on merit of what clubs have actually done. :idunno:

Got to agree ,just a numbers game and already saw one group multi posting with the same user names ,think Martyn Collins has made the wrong choice, but there is not much we can do about it

Yeah I'm going to send MM a wee email and send a note in of my concerns. I'm not sure the voting on FB is the best way of deciding this award and it appears a total free for all by the folk that have FB pages. We (NMS) have discouraged the use of FB over the website in order to protect the club. I appreciate that we sometimes to need to move with the times but I'm not sure that FB is the step forward. It's not being bitter about maybe not retaining our trophy it's just a little crazy the way it's being done ... and I'm sure the best club will win ! :)

My american football team had a brilliant forum and when Facebook came along and became popular in 08/09 they set up a page on there and within the space of 6 months the forum had died and there was very little activity on the Facebook page either because you cannot really start threads or organise things easily. So I have to agree that for some things Facebook is not the way forward!

Couldn't agree more with the above. That's why we always let people know about and try to direct them over to NMS from our facebook page. We only use facebook as a feeder into NMS, but some people want to/prefer a facebook group compared to a forum. I much prefer the community that we have through the forum

I quite like how the two can blend. Facebook deals with all the attention seeking / benign questions / moronic questions / rtfm questions, leaving forums for actual discussion and searchable content.

Facebook can also be useful for events organising right enough.

Seen that Paul. I think Modern MINIs response to people asking why is being done via Facebook is terrible.

William, what was the response from MM? I must confess to not being a subscriber.
I've bought the odd copy, but don't really like the style or the way it's written/edited, but that's a personal view.
I guess that it takes less effort to just collate figures from FB popularity contest and award the one with the most votes, the title...

T I'm not too sure if you read Tony's question to MM about the club award but it was very well put and he also made a couple of suggestions in relation to how he felt that it could be dealt with. A simple and effective post with Martyn Collins replying

I was gonna stay out of it but I just couldn't hold my tongue when I woke up an hour or so ago:

"For the record, here's my two penn'orth for what it's worth:

It's nice to know that the winner this year will be safe in the knowledge that they have NOT won the award because of the effort they have put into organising runs and attending shows. The respect that they have from others in the wider MINI community. The regular mod/admin meetings they have attended to improve the club for their members. The hours of driving to attend events literally hundreds of miles away from home to meet up with other like minded folk. The help and advice given out when a question is asked no matter how small or insignificant it may seem. The constant attention to detail. The never ending quest to find ways and means to improve their club by asking "what do you, the members, want to do/see/visit/attend ?". The thoughtfulness of the members by sending texts/pm's as soon as you have any real life dramas, or problems, offering their kind wishes and offers of help no matter what your issue is. The non-MINI related events just to mix things up a bit and strengthen what are already lifelong friendships.

I know what it takes and is involved to win the award as I've been in the winning club for the last two years, GPUKOC in 2013 & New MINI Scotland in 2014.

There are no doubt a few clubs that will know in their hearts that they are just like the clubs I have described above and feel that they truly deserve the award but, sorry folks, it just ain't gonna be you this year.

May I suggest the name be changed from "M.M. Oscars" to the "M.M. X-Factor Style Most Votes Wins Award" ?

It's a shame that the winners will not have been carefully thought about, and all their efforts considered, and I feel that the "easiest option" to decide the winner has been taken instead.

This year will not be about those that talk the talk, it'll sadly be about those who shout the loudest.

I have not posted the club that I want to win as this year it just seems pointless in doing so.

Pete"

You are so right Pete. I've bitten my tongue about it too to some degree but came back from work last night and thought it was better to say something now than leave it until after the awards had been given and make it look like I was complaining about who won. That wasn't what it was all about. In the past when the MM oscars have been awarded they have short listed clubs that MM clearly thought deserved the award. I've no idea why that hasn't happened again this year. The bit that's also a little frustrating was the fact that Martyn Collins also says its just light hearted ... I doubt the winning club see it that way for the reasons that you outlined above Pete. What I think is that MM just wanted an easy way to decide the award and hence the reason decided to deal with it on FB. MM couldn't pick a club to decide the best owners club through their dedication, attendance at events, etc because as we know MM aren't always at some of the events !

No I hadn't Davy, thanks for posting it up.
I'll see if I can find it and read the lot!
Wasn't super-keen on Mr Collins after last year's comments that he made (and was subsequently forced to delete) to Pete about GPOCUKs attendance at MITP.
He's unlikely to have changed my view having read this so far...

Yeah Pete and I were raging about it all ... but he wasn't quick enough for some because I knew he'd delete his post but not before I managed to get a screen shot ...
He's a GP owner and basically said to Pete that him or the GP members didn't have to go to MITP

I think it's also worth realising that award or not, we've got a pretty fantastic club. Yes it would be nice to be recognised (again) but the people who Pete identified, they'll be nodding their head, like us to them, because we know the work that goes in to create such a great club and the ones that aren't will disappear like they always do.

Well for those that don't get Modern MINI unfortunately NMS did not take this years honours that went to MINIacs. I'm well aware of their FB following and may I be the first to congratulate them on taking the award.
Not wanting to sound bitter or take the shine off their victory I'm not sure that the voting was the best this year not just for the club award but for all the awards, but the award has been announced and that's it.
Can I say a massive "Thanks to one and all" that cast a vote for NMS as Neil and Pete have mentioned above we do have a special club and we should be proud of it and the things that we do. Let's keep moving the club forward and here's to next years awards ...

A huge thanks to everyone who voted for NMS in this years MM Oscars. As above not wanting to sound bitter but this years MM oscars where what can only be described as a shambles. Far better if for the next oscars it went back to the old way, let's see if the powers that be listen.

A huge congratulations to the MINIacs only group in winning this years award

I've been thinking about the MM Oscars and here's my two penn'orth.

There should be a panel of one mod/admin from all of the well known MINI Clubs. Ideally more than 10 and an odd number.
They all cast one vote for what they see as "the best club" but can not vote for their own club. The club with the most votes wins.
I've been lucky enough to have been in the winning club in 2013 (GPUKOC) & 2014 (New MINI Scotland). I could claim 2015 as well but the less said about that the better.
[emoji23]
I don't find the sensible answer to it all to be that difficult to be honest.

I will have a chat to Martyn Collins at some point per the weekend with my idea.
