Brakes and cruise control

Well today my warning light came on for the rear pads being too low so need to get them sorted. But at the same time the cruise control has stopped working. It will turn the light on the dash but will not let me set it.
Are the related?

Have you fitted any wires under the dash? First thing to do (which I did when it happened to me) is with the car running check your brake lights aren't stuck on, I had a wire get jammed between the switch and the pedal and it pushed the switch out of position, popped the switch back in and that's it :)

Yes, I think that's standard behaviour - at least my cruise control stopped engaging at exactly the moment the front brake wear sensor said they were overdue, so it's too strong a coincidence not to be true. I'm sure there's some BMW logic to it, though I reckon it's punishment for not meeting their owner standards....
