And lurking under the arches is a KW Coilover set up. The MINI man speaking to me wasn't to keen to speak about the suspension, but by from what he said I would imagine this is going to be an option factory or dealer I don't know.

The car looks amazing in the flesh, we were told to expect the outside to be pretty much what you see bar possibly a few tweaks here and there and possibly a more aggressive side skirt. The power to be a minimum of 230bhp which is a step in the right direction. The brakes again we were told that the setup is looking like it will get the thumbs up for the front and probably a smaller setup on the back.

A pretty bold looking car. The look is a bit too much for me but I am pleased that MINI are making something that really stands out.

Looks better than the standard car which does nothing for me. But the massive bonnet/bumper overhang beyond the front wheels is still there

Someone at JCW needs to put the red paintbrush down, less is more.
Good to see a decent power figure as a starting point. Don't like the wheels, they're horrendous. Car is certainly aggressive looking, a little too much for my tastes. Finally, someone at Mini has realised that they can't do suspension, and turned to the experts!
Not keen on the carbon on the exhaust, I hate carbon used as tinsel - for weight saving fair enough, for decoration, urgh. Makes a nice noise though!
I have found one thing I do like though (so it's not all doom and gloom) - I like the way the doors curve in and out in the front 3/4 shot :p

Yeah I agree MINI have suddenly started to add too much red into the fore. Was subtle on the initial GP and JCW models but now !
I'm with you I don't like the wheels but I like what's behind them but I'm being drawn to the aggressive look of the car although the rear spoiler looks like it's been stuck on top of a ... rear spoiler !
I love the exhaust and a wee bit of carbon to tidy it up and save me polishing I'm happy with ! How long that lasts with the heat from it who knows .. maybe the old JCW engraved tips mights have been a safer bet.
I love the brushed silver paint look on it though too although wonder how hard that'll be to touch up, but might be a great idea for not seeing swirls or marks !!

I'm a bit of a traditionalist/old fart in that I like chrome exhaust pipes, I even find polishing them therapeutic...

Will they do a dsg equivalent, like the M cars? Or maybe the ZF 8 speed that gets raved about?
I like a stick shift, but most manufacturers seem to be offering flappy paddles these days

I love this, more excited for the launch than ever :yes nod: I also like the fact we're getting a minimum of 19bhp increase with power gains easier than ever to achieve I'd imagine.
I must be one of the few who'd take this car as is, I like the wheels, paint, and the red bits :thumbs up: great photos!

I like that, you do all realise however that the carbon fibre round the exhausts is likely there as a heat shield not just for show. Real carbon fibre makes an excellent heat shielding material.
Example here for the doubters among you ! - http://carbonfibreforducati.com/products/33-848-1098-1198-exhaust-heat-shield-cover-for-termignoni

I doubt it would get hot enough to melt the bumper trim on a mini though...
EcosseGP
8th July 2014, 12:47 PM
Over time though I think that carbon fibre is more likely to crack (or the lacquer protecting it will) over the stainless steel tips which can be polished for life !!

8th July 2014, 03:58 PM
Well when you engage the bi modal feature it bypasses the rear silencer so i would imagine those tips get pretty damn hot !
I've had exhaust tips glowing before on track day with a car that had the rear silencer bypassed so I wouldn't discount it entirely.
I would hope that your wrong when you say that JCW would have only had making things look pretty in mind when designing their tuning packs since there background comes from Motorsport based performance enhancements. Especially given how much money they charge you for the thing ! Lol
Mon the fish
8th July 2014, 05:20 PM
Would you not put the heat shielding on the bumper itself, if that's what it's main purpose was?
Hopefully they go down the line of JCW performance enhancements in the way M division has done, as a lot of the JCW stuff for the R56 was styling items

valid point ,all of the Evo's that I had,had carbon "heat shields" as standard and they looked :thumbs up: all points considered I'am a sucker for a nice piece of carbon in fact I'am picking up another piece of the stuff on sat :yes nod:

I read an interesting article the other day which done comparisons between MINI and Porsche from past to present and it was of the view that the newer "hot" minis are now Rivals to Porsche's! At first I dismissed it thinking it was a load of rubbish but when you actually started to read through it all you soon start to see the similarities between the brands and the target markets so maybe this is just another step in that direction ?
Well both the VW Beetle (which spawned the Porsche family) and Mini started off as "Peoples' Cars" (Volks Wagen).
Back to the Future? Quite ironic if the brands and target markets are similar again today. I know that speccing up a MINI can cost a packet, but hopefully MINI's pricing structure won't start to reflect that of Porsche...
I can see where they're/you're coming from, but I'm still not sure if MINI will ever be seen in the same 'league' as Porsche - that might be wishful thinking on the part of MINI's marketing dept. And TBH I'm not that comfortable with MINI being positioned in that way - it was and is a car which has a following across a wide demographic spectrum, whereas Porsche (leaving out your 924/944s etc) is very much still limited to those with large wallets or easy credit. You could argue that there are similarities (MINI was and is seen as a quality product - backed by BMW - which stood apart from your 'run of the mill' hatchback) and that GP's are MINI's GT2/3 equivalents. So a bit of 'Social Climbing' might be OK for MINI, but to most folks a MINI will be a realistic proposition which stands on its own merits, and comparisons with the likes of Porsche could have both positive and negative effect.
I remember years ago (80's) that we in the 'West of Scotland Mini Owners Club' entered a team in the Doune Car Gymkhana for the first time and won, which severely p*issed off some members of the Porsche Owners Club (who usually won apparently), so much so that they changed the rules and the course the next year so it totally didn't suit the Minis... So to me, Mini/MINI will always be a real "Peoples' Car" which thumbs its nose at the really expensive stuff while running rings round them. Like your local Comprehensive taking on Eaton in the footy. So much more FUN than trying to become part of the elite!
Going back to the beginning, Lest We Forget - the Beetle was the idea of Mr. Porsche and a certain rather nasty wee man (with a moustache soon to be named after its owner) and a duff haircut, so the Mini at least wins in the 'Not the brainchild of an evil dictactor hell-bent on genocide and world domination' stakes.

Latest on fire GT3 aside, Porsche's are also far better engineered then Minis, but I do see your point.
For the price most folk will end up paying for a JCW, you could get a really nice 997. I know where I'd put my money

Interesting, BUT Is MINI "the new Porsche"? Er, No :frown:
That would intimate that Porsche was now something else, which it isn't. (Despite the Cayenne and the Panamera). You could argue that Porsche lost its way in the 80s trying to satisfy red-braced £££ bloated London Stock Market Traders, and in fact it's only in the last few years that the company has rediscovered its true mojo and produced a series of great drivers' cars again. So you could say that "Porsche is the Old Porsche"!
Let's just forget comparisons and say that "MINI is the new MINI" :yes nod:
By the way, I REALLY like this... Black alloys would be cool, but the silver suits it.
