It's a must Andy, we loved it. On a Sunday we went from Stornaway to Tarbert and only saw one other car and two push bikes. It's also worth carrying on down to North / South Uist and getting the ferry from there, back to Skye.

I need to do this!

Still haven't discounted it from a highland tour but it don't wanna put folk off with the extra expense

Crackin snaps ........ roll on the HT 2014 & may the weather gods be with us.

The difference between a clear (sometimes even :sunny:) day & low lying mist makes all the difference with all of those stunning views that are on offer :yes nod:

Have a look at this.
http://www.virtualheb.co.uk/golden-road-isle-of-harris-western-isles.html

My understanding is that a lot EU money was used to resurface the road and when calculated per the number of cars that use it per mile it was extremely costly, hence, "The Golden Road". Part of it goes over peat bog and actually "floats" on the bog. A coach driver said to me that "you can feel it move" when driving a loaded coach. Don't know if that's true.
The main thing is that it's a great road to drive and the scenery is awesome.
