View Full Version : Spark Plugs NGK BKR7EQUP R53 JCW alternatives

I'm looking at changing the plugs on my R53 JCW 200 and can't believe a set of OEM plugs are £85.
I see NGK's own Iridium plugs (BKR7EIX for the R53) are only £25.
Plus Denso, Bosch and Champion seem to offer alternatives too at a considerable saving.
It seems the 210 version definitely needs the heat range 7 plug and I'm assuming the 200 also needs this rather than the standard R53's heat range 6 plugs.
Any advise would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

Definitely need the 7s. Can you get BCR7ES? I'm running 8s and it was £8 for 4!

I'm running BCR8ES, so I'd imagine BCR7ES would be fine

I'll double check later exactly which variation I opted for, but I stuck with NGK plugs mainly due to price and availability :)

Anybody know what the letters and numbers actually mean?

Numbers are temp range, the higher the number the cooler the plug, at least that's appears to be NGK's system.
NGK have a great PDF that explains what their lettering system means, different materials etc.
How these all relate to a specific car confuses me totally.

I could go into detail about how to work out what combos you can use but to be honest your best just sticking to the alternative options list I posted earlier.

Just in case anyone else is in the same boat at some point, I thought I'd post my outcome.
Sadly I couldn't get the copper cored BKR7ES here in the UK, so went for the BKR7EIX Iridium plugs for £27.99 a set.
When I changed them over I found I had Bosch FDR7DQP fitted, which are one range too hot and listed for the standard R53 and not the JCW equipped cars. I recently suffered a cracked head and wonder if the hotter plugs caused a hot spot in the head near the plug resulting in the head cracking, don't know?
Anyway, the car now revs cleanly to the rev limiter, something it didn't do nearly so freely before. I know plugs don't increase performance per say, but old and worn plugs definitely reduce performance I guess, so it's now running more as it should.
Thanks to all for your advice
John
