What would be the best format to get as many CD's on as possible MP3 AAV WAV files ?

Quick answer AAC!

Detailed answer - AAC and MP3 are lossy compression codecs; they will both create file sizes that are a fraction of the size of WAV files.
AAC files tend to be slightly smaller than MP3 files of the same bit rate i.e. a track encoded as a 128 bps AAC will be slightly smaller than the same track encoded as a 128 bps MP3. The consensus is that AAC sounds better than MP3 at the same bit rate, although this is subjective. I find 128 bps AAC acceptable but anything less than 192 bps MP3 pretty ropey! Depending on how fussy you are you may notice no difference, especially if you are still using the smelly headphones that come with the iPod!;)
