Can't say this is isn't enough advanced warning!

I have got some ideas about this using part of Duncans recommended route up Braemar and Lecht but if anyone has any recommendations go for it.

I'm thinking of THIS (https://mapsengine.google.com/map/edit?mid=zUGeTiDMJOHo.koloD4jBrz2U) for Day 1

And THIS (https://maps.google.co.uk/maps/ms?msid=203859444534611180853.0004d873aca368803638 6&msa=0&ll=57.654219,-5.855713&spn=1.310834,3.911133) for Day 2

Any thoughts, opinions or further suggestions?

This gives us a night in Ullapool which we haven't used for a while, and then a night in Portree on Skye which we haven't used before.

First night is in Saturday 13th September in Ullapool.

Recommended hotels are; The Royal Hotel (http://ullapoolhotel.co.uk/) and the Caledonian Hotel (http://www.bespokehotels.com/caledonianhotel) . There are many, many top notch bed and breakfasts. There is a campsite for the more adventurous, but the old heads amongst us can tell you why this might not be a good idea!

Update from @Lady R

"As a local to Ullapool i wouldn't necessarily recommend the Caley, it can be a hit or a miss and is mainly used by bus tours and the like. Would recommend the Arch Inn (01854 612454) Ladysmith guest house or Riverside guest house which is just at the top of the street, family run small hotel. If you're looking for a bit of posh the Ceilidh Place offers more expensive rooms plus it has the bunk house which is very basic but offers somewhere to get your head down at a lower price"

Second night is on Sunday 14th September in Portree.

Recommended hotels are; Marmalade (http://www.marmaladehotels.com/), Cuillin Hills (http://www.cuillinhills-hotel-skye.co.uk/) – very expensive mind :hand:, and the Royal Hotel (http://www.royal-hotel-skye.com/). Bosville Hotel is also worth a look (http://www.bosvillehotel.co.uk/)

Cheaper options as always are the many bed and breakfasts in the area, and the Caledonian Hotel (http://www.accommodation-portree.co.uk/) which makes for a great night out, and the Isles Inn (http://www.accommodationskye.co.uk/). Also within the town centre are the Tongadale and Portree Hotels. They are not the best places but may have cheaper rooms.

On the Monday I would recommend a run down the island to catch the ferry back from Armadale to Mallaig. Its best if these tickets are booked in advance at calmac (http://www.calmac.co.uk/)

If you're doing the A93, leave Blairgowrie at 6am or so, when the road is nice and quiet - catch it at it's best.

I may be up for this, but won't know until March once the Euro 2016 qualifying fixtures have been announced

no worries. We had a miserable time on the way to Fort William last week so I'm looking at trying different variations as a means to an end. I don't think my wits can cope with 40mph through Glencoe any more :argh:

Alex, any chance we might have dates lined up by January so that folks can book time off with their employers?
First come first served in my place & don't want to risk it. There is often a mad scramble come early January when our rota is published :knife:

For anyone else thinking of coming along then be prepared for some of the finest roads & views imaginable, not to mention the fine banter in the evenings over an ale or two

Same with us for booking time off. Is early Sept possible as we may be unavailable later sept.

Alex from NM
25th October 2013, 10:21 PM
Hi chaps, will see what I can do. Hmm, how early is early Duncan? My initial thoughts were to make it later in Sept to avoid dawdling tourists :p

as ever happy to go with the general consensus, provided no one has time booked off at our place :D

Tam was where it's at boys :)

Consulted the holiday board at work and I'm free any weekend as it stands.

Just double checking to see if Gill can get the time off but looking at Sat 13th Sept to Monday 15th. If our 2nd night is portree or Oban this will give people who don't want to stay the 2nd night plenty of time to make their ways home for Monday

Isles inn was £70 which wasn't too bad but it's a bit rough and ready. For the more money conscious there is a hostel there.

To be honest I was shocked at how high the prices are considering it's a Sunday night and the schools are all back.

That's the Royal booked in Ullapool but like Stewart Portree not so easy.

Marmalade looks best value for a single at £90 but will do more investigating. How big is Portree are most places all within walking distance?

Stewart
17th February 2014, 09:11 PM
Dam did they have a single it just said Twin or double!!! £110

Double Room £91.67
VAT (20%) included £18.33
Total Price £110

How big is Portree are most places all within walking distance?

You could kick a football over the main part at the wee square. Everything further out is houses, schools and works. Nice harbour that has a fish and chip shop. When I was there last year we had a nice meal off a place in the square only to find out when I drove down to the ferry terminal there was a fish and chip shop with probably forty people standing waiting to get in.

Definitely the case. Seems like there is unofficial skye tax on portree rooms. Was considering oban for the 2nd night but I think ullapool to oban would've been a very long day

I suppose it makes a change for 1 year at least.

Probably worth reiterating that there is a raft of b&bs in the area too if the hotels aren't to your tastes

If you're an early riser look for the 11.40 sailing. It'll probably take an hour to get from Portree to Armadale if the traffic is bad, and you'll need to check in 20 mins before sailing minimum.

Otherwise there is a 1pm sailing and people can take their time getting down

Would also like to see the 'Skyfall' road if possible on the way back but not sure exactly where it is - don't know the area well so any thoughts on a good route back down to central belt would be appreciated

Skyfall! had to be done.
http://i435.photobucket.com/albums/qq72/sav112g/SkyfallGlenEtive_zpsd9de2db7.jpg

We go past the Castle or near enough on the Sunday before we head over the bridge, a few miles to the left instead of going straight right probably a good place on the Sunday to take a pit stop and regroup for the crossing over.
The ferry is good fun with everyone but got to say I love the road down the A87. Thinking taking it easy and going past the Castle on the Monday on the A87, down the Glen Garry road to the A82 as it's fantastic in the right weather.

So Ferry or not to Ferry

You could get the glenelg ferry still

Skyfall road is sign posted glen etvie. About 10 mile south of glencoe village

Maybe look to see if this could be included on our return on the Monday, any thoughts from the experts?

Alex from NM

Would be very easy for anyone travelling down the A82 on the way south

It's a dead end road mind so you'd have to rejoin where you leave the a82

day 1 is a snorter :D
A bit worried about the route I had for day 2 which clocks in at 278 miles! I was worried it wasn't going to be long enough :thud:

Day 1 almost definite here (https://mapsengine.google.com/map/edit?authuser=0&hl=en&mid=zUGeTiDMJOHo.koloD4jBrz2U) (with luck some video highlights to come soon)

Day 2 - open to debate! here (https://mapsengine.google.com/map/edit?authuser=0&hl=en&mid=zUGeTiDMJOHo.k9Uf3hoszdfU)

Have a personal feeling day 2 is going to be just too long. At the minute it does include the Glenelg ferry and a tour of Skye. Some of that might get chopped

Looks like once on Skye there are a couple of chances to cut across to Portree if people don't want to do the loops or we are struggling for time so think it should be fine.

A massive thank you to Alex and Gill for sorting the route great roads on both days, really enjoyed both days, was my first Highland Tour and certainly won't be the last. Weather was spot on as well, couldn't have asked for anything better and of course most important of all the great people who made the tour what it is :thumbs up:

The run home was a bit longer than we expected but got there eventually, covering some more good roads along the way.

As above a massive thanks to Alex and Gill for organising everything. I thought my little encounter on the first day was going to put a downer on my whole weekend but it didn't, not in the slightest! As soon as I put the keys down for the night and the evening food, drinks and banter began it was long gone. I've had a fantastic weekend, drove on some roads I knew and plenty I didn't the route was spot on! I honestly wouldn't have wanted to be in any other car, it was 800 miles of fun and no other car in my opinion would've been anywhere near us.

What made this weekend so special was the fantastic people! Most I knew, some I've met once or twice and some I hadn't met and this weekend gave us a chance to socialise and get to know everyone. There's nothing I'd have changed at all! Apart from our Detour but that just added to the whole experience.

Oh and a huge thanks to William, Stoney, Andrew, Megan and Christine  Rachael will be in a Moonwalk Grey 5 door sooner than she thinks

Smashing pics y'all

Now that I've managed to get the MINI checked out, I can now offer our post Spean Bridge experience.

With the A82 being officially closed i.e. the chap in the high viz at the roundabout says so, we had to succumb to our worst case scenario and look forward to a trip home via Oban. After another wee while we decided to cancel the appointment at the Vet as getting there for 18:15 was just not going to happen.

Approaching Connel Bridge we met a tail back ........... a very long one at that. A few times I turned the engine off completely as we were not moving at all. After moving another few yards the bloke behind us then decided to give us a shunt in his Misubushi Animal .......... fun, fun, effin fun!!!!

What more could go wrong? ........... well moments later the MINI decides enough is enough and proceeded to overheat, popping the entire contents of the expansion chamber all over the tarmac ....... not cool!!!

Thankfully Malcolm, Siobian and Stewart were on the scene to assist the overall cooling down period so to speak.

By this point we were not far from the bridge and after topping up with water (cheers Stewart) the attempt was made by leaving large gaps in the queue and shutting off the engine when stationary. Once free of the heavy traffic we 'air cooled' on to the Green Welly and eventually home ............ relief!!!

After a thorough check by Thornliebank Motor Engineers the fault was found to be a loose connection at the thermostatic plug and after cleaning, resecuring and testing all is now well.

Shunt damage looks cosmetic as after cleaning and polishing no visible damage can now be found. Will still get it checked over but it looks as if aerokits & MINI's design can take a wee thud.

Gonna give it a good clean again today & smile again at my wee 10 year old marvel.

So pleased engine fault was minor and no worse off for the shunt. Don't know what the "animal" was thinking!! The wee 10 year old was looking great.

Looks like an eventful trip home Crombers! Hope it didn't spoil the weekend and good that it is nothing serious.

I was very lucky with the journey home as sat nav took me left at Spean Bridge across to the A9 so avoided all the traffic.

I also guess we need to keep in perspective as I understand the road was closed following a fatal bike crash

Sorry to hear about your rear end Crombers  seriously though, i would check the bolted parts behind the affected area for warp damage, i had that on my first Cooper when it was involved in a shunt like yours, even a little shunt can have a big impact behind the panels, mine wasn't noticed until after all the work had been carried out and the insurance wouldn't pay out more.
Fingers crossed you'll be ok :thumbs up:

Home at last!

Great pics too everyone. Also found the cause of the engine fault that caused a bit of a scare up the Lecht. One of the PCV pipes has been collapsing under pressure and heat cutting it off. Gonna go back to standard set up as soon as I can get the parts. And as Orranje are now doing a decoke for £170 its worth going back to standard
