Just a few 'notes' for anyone with musical interests...

Ravi Shankar, Sitar Maestro and Guru to legions of Musos around the globe has died aged 92. You might not have heard of him - or only in passing - but he influenced many folks you WILL have heard of, most notably George Harrison of Beatles fame, who was taught Sitar by Ravi back in the mid-60s and helped kick-start what we now know as "World Music" as well as a widespread interest in Eastern philosophy. To show how highly regarded (not to mention cool) he was, Ravi played at Monterey in 1967 and Woodstock in 1969 and collaborated with many other musicians from different genres over the years. Oh and you might have heard of one of his daughters - singer Norah Jones.

Having enjoyed Ravi's music for ages, I finally got to see him and his daughter Anoushka (also a fantastic Sitar player) from the front row of Glasgow Royal Concert Hall a few years back. The music took me somewhere that night, from where some of me has never returned!
Thanks Ravi - hope you and George are jamming tonight

That's really sad to hear  Him and Patrick Moore in one week. bummer.
He certainly influenced a lot of people, not just the beatles.. even such folks as Flight of the Concords!

..I have to admit that I did NOT know that Norah Jones  was his daughter... Every day is a school day ;)

That'll be a cracker of a jamming session... Shankar, Harrison, Hendrix...

Yes, but I bet Ravi will still be telling Jimi off about burning and smashing his guitar at Monterey! :hand:
Re. Patrick Moore - I wonder just how many kids (of all ages) gazed in even more wonder at the starry skies thanks to Patrick and "The Sky at Night"? :thumbs up: :thankyou:
And how many (comedy) impressionists (as opposed to the painters!) owe him a chunk of their careers?

Sad news about Ravi. Sitar sounded so good on vinyl. Am I the only one old enough to have worn beads and a Kaftan?

Probably, but I bet I ran you a close second in my old cut-off Levi's and cheesecloth shirt maaaannn! (I have the photo to prove it - next to my Clubbie Estate, if people pledge enough money, I promise NOT to post it here).

"Raga Mala" by Ravi Shankar.
I have this brilliant book which I bought years ago from a specialist publisher (Genesis)

It's signed by the great man, and came beautifully bound in its own case, with 2 rare CDs and even Ravi (and George Harrison's) favourite Incense Sticks!
So you get the 'Full Ravi' while you read!

Ah yes, but there's more than one way to Rock my friend!

"And if you listen very hard
The tune will come to you at last.
When all is one and one is all
To be a rock and not to roll."
