View Full Version : bad lighting

Am I imagining it or are the lights much less useful in the newer positioning? ie R56 vs R50. Coming up on wed in the dark, especially on the unlit parts of the A90 and over the Netherley road, I could hardly see anything.
Now pondering whether I would benefit from spots...although they are too expensive to happen any time soon.

Joanna, have you got xenons?

She does not andy, spots are only for full beam jo and tbh I'd have thought your lights would have been ok on full beam, but if not they'll should help a bit.

Cheers Greig.
Joanna, tbh MINI non-xenon headlamps are a bit pants especially when dipped. Like greig says, spots will help on main beam but your pretty well stuck with candles for dipped head lights. :frown:

I got some and noticed a considerable difference, particularly on full beam and a lot cheaper than spots.

On the R56 (non-xenon), when you go to main beam the dipped beam gets 'thrown' longer, making the light right in front of the car worse - is that right? That's what the wife's clubbie does.
Oh, and instead of spots, get hold of some 'illegal' rally-spec main beam bulbs - they're epic, and not checked on an MOT...

Hi guys, thanks for the replies :thumbs up:
Firstly that word 'illegal' is going nowhere near my car NOWHERE i tell you!! I am far too much of a worrier for stuff like that!
These Night Breaker ones - are they totally legal, just a diff bulb?? presume I'd be telling my insurance about it. Wish i'd gone down the specialist insurance route but only heard about those after I'd sorted my insurance late last month. Diamond wanted to know everything yet didn't understand half of it. Still as long as I've told them everything (they even know I've white indicator lenses :argh: ) and hopefully they don't charge me for the change, then I know I'm in the right and that is what is important to me. You can't change me on that so don't even try
I'll be telling them about the grille next month anyway...
Do they need to be reset for the angle or whatever if they are brighter? Mind you being smaller I seem to get dazzled by half the other cars on the road

As far as I know they are legal, they are sold by mike off new Mini stuff who I think would be trust worthy and knows what he is on about. I’ve lived with the lights for near on four years so I’m more than happy just to keep them as be. No point getting worried about anything on your car.
You’re like me, a worrier and we over think things by the looks of it.
As for the Grill I look at it like this. If it’s a Mini OEM Part you can get on your model car from the dealers and it does not enhance performance or radically change the look of the car its fine. There is no modification to fit the part as it’s a genuine mini fitment too.:thumbs up:

Am sure Joanna is talking about the rally lights, not the night breakers that Mike sells :thumbs up:

my insurers wanted to know all modifications and optional extras so I will be telling them about the grille. The grille should come under external decoration though which is already on there for the white lense covers and didn't cost extra it was just information. I'll tell them anyway!
I think it might be hazardous getting the two of us in one location Stewart. Probably highly amusing for an onlooker though:rolleyes: Too much worrying, overthinking and pondering, Greig will have to be ready to be dad and make all the decisions. Do you want a cup of tea or coffee? Errrrmmmmmmm.......

Joanna, the nightbreakers are legal and are also VERY good addition to the car. Makes a huge difference from std bulbs. I had them on my Coop a few years ago. Well worth the money. I can't remember if the R56 is 2 lamps (one for main beam and one for dip, but if they are get both !) :Santa:

Craig, think they are one bulb. We bought them at Liverpool from Mikey for the Van, but haven't had a chance to fit them yet.

There you go if Mom & Dad think its fine, then I’ll go with that. :thumbs up:
Actually had a wee think there coming through the west end into town and back out to the house. They really are piss poor in the rain at night. I might pick up a set. You pull up to the car in front and see the lights other than that you get absolutely no projection forward at all on the road. :frown:

raining again huh? I always said the east coast is better.... been lovely here!
I actually think I will have to leave Glasgow eventually purely because of the rain - i seem to suffer from Rain Affective Disorder. It puts me in a right bad mood!
It was unlit roads that I was really aware of it Stewart, because I could hardly see!

The night beakers are 100% legal you need 1 set for the R56 and 2 for the R53
You do not need to tell your insh about changing your light bulb
it's like if a bulb went out on your car and you got a bulb from say auto parts and fitted it would you then go and say I got a non oem bulb fitted or a rear brake bulb ect ect
Yes the grill should be but not the bulbs that's just a little bit silly ;)
IF IN DOUBT FLAT OUT :)

Osram Night Breaker Plus is appropriate for the majority of all makes and models of cars and vans where a halogen headlight bulb is fitted as standard. Night Breaker Plus are direct replacements of standard halogen headlight bulbs and are available in other common headlight bulb types, H7, H4, H1, as well as not so common types H3 and H11. There is no need for any modification to your vehicle to replace your standard halogens with these bulbs. As you are replacing your bulbs with identical wattage bulbs, the Night Breaker Plus bulbs are fully Road Legal and comply with all regulations
Auto Express - Best Headlamp Bulb 2011
And again, as a result of the mega test of Britain's best-selling weekly car magazine, NIGHT BREAKER PLUS has picked up the award for the "Best Headlamp Bulb".
The verdict of Auto Express is: "Osram rules in the performance categories, with its Silverstar winning in the up to 60 sector and new Night Breaker Plus proving the best of the 100 per cent bulbs"
Every retailer has the same bit of info that these are road legal. (fully ECE approved without restrictions for use on roads throughout Europe).
Anyway yes its Christmas and I should be doing festive things, but family seems to have it all in hand with the food...and you can Only fly the wee RC Chinook for so long before someone is going to kill you.....I came online for a quick blast. I’m going to order a set and hope they get here before the grill scenario and someone still has to hint at what beer is his tipple too….
Oh and cheers Rob now I'm thinking I need to phone the insurance with the new grill:shut up:

Joanna I thought the same an was toying with the idea of spots but got the night breakers from new mini stuff, definitely made a big difference to my driving on our stag infested roads, much cheapness and easy to fit even a daft lassie like me can do it 😄 x

I would say you def should tell them. It's only decorative though so hopefully it won't cost to add it on.

I dont understand the point of telling the insurers that you change a grille, lenses etc.
Most insurers only return the car back to it's original condition, so, if your new grille was damaged in an accident it wouldn't be replaced with the same type, you would get the old type.
Did you ask the insurer this when you advised them?

when I took out the policy they wanted me to tell them of all modifications and optional extras from the standard. I don't have any big issue with informing them, the less excuse they have to not pay out in the event of a claim, the better.
They are not a specialist insurer (would try that route next year) and therefore they don't have much knowledge of what some things even are they just want them noted on the policy as they are non standard. They know everything so my conscience is at ease. Only the pepper pack made a difference to the price, the sunroof, internal colours, pdc, winter wheels/tyres etc etc are just noted.

Asked mike to put in an extra pair for you, sent Email and through there sponsor thread on a forum so hopefully he or someone else gets it and sorts it all out.
As for the insurance my car is insured as it officially has the Pepper Pack although in reality it has everything the Chill pack has but deliberately (in my view) the dealer missed out the floor mats as that’s all its missing even came with the sports Wheel, sports Button and sports seats and rear privacy Glass.
I just accepted if I was to lose the car the replacement would probably be spec’d to just the Pepper pack. But as the Car had Thousands off it and I’d not paid for the extra bits so I was more than happy to just go with it. I'll think about grill but sometimes you come away thinking the person has not got a clue what your on about and it can do more harm than good. Modification on the car in my book should be when you fit something non standard that adds Value or performance and drastically changes the look of the car.
Considering what some do to there cars they definitely don’t inform as they would be on every week.
