Hi everybody.
Conscious that we do not appear to have any runs booked for next year and was wondering if anybody had any plans.
I might try and organise one round the borders but have not done one before so would need to find a suitable route.
If anybody is planning to organise anything next year could they suggest roughly when they would be doing it so I can work around these dates. Also any other dates I should avoid e.g Mikey show.
Think it would be good to have a few rough dates pencilled in spread across the year.
The runs are my (and Toms!) highlight of mini ownership.
Neil.

Neil always best to orgainise your run for when suites you. You will always get a turn out from the regular faces and there has been some new people to the site so they may want to show there face and cars aswell :yes nod:. As yet ive nopt heared of any run being orgnaised yet

Neil,
Good on you for thinking about organising a run. AndyP and Lenore have organised a fair few runs down the Borders so they could give you some tips on routes and how to go about it.
All I would say is do what works for you re dates, but bear in mind other factors which may affect how many people turn up (ie other big events). Mikeys show is normally Oct ;)

Thanks Craig - hope I can sort something but life is manic but considering how much I enjoy don't think I should just rely on others to organise.
Thought it would be good to fit around other events so that every couple of months we have an event of some form to look forward to. Appreciate not easy to achieve and will see what responses we get over the next few days and take it from there.
Will update my first post with any known/provisional events.

As Craig has said we've organised a few runs down this way. And I'd love to continue that but we've had to commit more to working on Sunday's to save costs at work. :frown: Trouble is all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy. :frown: Just had a chat with Lenore and I think we'll look at doing the Heart Of The Borders run again this year - would be early September or late October.
I don't want to dent your bonnet but the cost of fuel for organising a run is astronomical! In the past when we organised a new run we'd recce the area and plot some roads we want to use in the run. Head home, plan the run on maps, draw up a basic route with expected turns, then head out again another day and do a full route recce plotting each turn and making turn notes and mile marks. Then the a couple of weeks before the run I'd do the whole route again checking the mileages and turn notes to make sure they are as accurate as possible. Then you've got the full run on the day. Total fuel cost in today's prices can easily run to a few hundred pounds!
But, organising a run always filled me with an excitement buzz and if we hadn't made a commitment to working Sunday's, we'd still be organising runs.
To be honest, I think these days I would do all the planning at home, then head out for ONE recce then do the run and make sure everyone knows there may be errors in the notes.
Neil, I organised a couple of runs down Kielder Water and they always went down well. A lunch stop at a pub in Bellingham which did a terrific carvery - can't remember the name of it at the moment, but it will be detailed in the route notes for those runs which will be in the older pages of the MINI Meets forum.
I've also always though the back roads from Hawick across through Jedburgh and across to Morebattle and then down into Kelso and across to Coldstream or Duns would be a cracker.

impressed at the effort put in Andy:thumbs up: I will say though, if I may (at risk of showing myself to be a pain in the ar*$) for someone up the back panicking, trying to catch up and without a navigating passenger or sat nav...the likelihood of a few mistakes in the notes would put me off entirely as I'd be pretty worried about losing everyone including myself. However that is pretty selfish so maybe just not for me ;)

Theres place on the run for people of all paces. You may find being further upfront better as you are travelling at the pace of the lead car which is generally national speed limits. Personally I prefer hanging around at the back because when you guys up front break away at junctions/turnings/traffic lights etc we have a more 'spirited' drive to catch up. I know that some newbies feel the back is a better option as they think they think it will be slower but it's usually the opposite haha
Or you can do a Stewart and go at your own pace and meet us at the stop off points (mainly highland tour for this example) he takes things at his own pace and stops for photo opportunities, im often jealous of the stuff he sees that I miss out on with bombing about lol.

I'd just like to throw in that no one should ever feel that they have to drive above the road conditions, speed limits or their own ability.
Detailed notes are supplied and regular stops are available to regroup in the event that folks get split up due to road conditions, the stops are often long enough for everyone to enjoy the banter and it's not just a case of when the last person turns up that the run continues.
It is each and everyone's responsibility to look out for each other.
Many people believe being at the back is the best and slowest place to be, history shows otherwise as many folks have already posted, the only time it is the slowest is when you dictate the pace there.
At the end of the day it's all about meeting up, displaying your car and having a good time, drive safe :motoring:

Why Do I feel that's directed at me, first in to Ullapool I tell you on the first Highland tour!
Enjoyed both the Perth Run (probably the warmest day of the year) and the Highland Tour up the stunning west coast. As Baz has said I enjoy the HT run as it’s so long and there really is only one way to go (not looking at any group who missed the turn) You can keep up and play follow the Mini for a bit of fun and then chill and enjoy the scenery and company when you meet up at the next stopping point.
I like going at the back for no other reason than I can relax and know I’m not going to slow anyone up, something like the Highland Tour is easy to that of say Rob’s (my first run) run thats shorter. Gong at the back has its good points and bad points as me and the green Mini in front found out on the Perth run with Mr’s (and I kid you not) 25 Mph Nissan on a road that you could never pass on round the Loch and down the other side from the queens view for what seemed like forever. :ragin:
Only got my name down for the HT in 2012, but good for you thinking about doing a run. Andy got us through that borders run with a little help but just when you thought right where do we go here there was usually a friendly face or mini waiting and I think it was the most challenging one to date I’ve been on with regards to directions.
At the end of the day it’s a great excuse to enjoy our cars and meet up, its always nice seeing new faces and new cars and catching up with the ones you’ve got to know over the years. :thumbs up:
Edit - I see Alan and me have the last bit covered ;) i really should check the thread for fresh posts when posting but there was a making a nice Cup of coffee in the mix there.

Thanks everybody.
If anybody has any ideas for events other than runs we could always think about organising that in stead/as well, Go-karting or Paintballing are 2 that spring to mind but could be others - golf for example.
If anybody wants to make suggestions I can pull a list together to consider.

I'd been thinking about asking around if anyone might be up for a pre Christmas Sunday pub lunch somewhere central belt, but I realise this time of year gets really busy.
Every year someone usually organises a Christmas lunch and we have a secret santa and so on.
Lenore and I organised last years but we cancelled it the day before because of the extremely dangerous weather around at the time and I just didn't want people driving on rutted snow covered roads for a social event.
We're crazy busy at work just now getting ready to install digital projectors across all four screens so there's no way we can organise this years jaunt.:frown:

We always like the runs with a "stop over." Allows everyone to have a beer and a good chat, but there is a cost element to that, in addition to the petrol costs.
I'm also joining the "going slower" gang, as I think that drivers miss so much on a run, concentrating only on the "long medium and short" drivers views. I also feel going at pace, which any Mini driver will want to do, me included, is something that is better done on your own. With 10 to 20 cars in convoy it is always a risk, especially if anyone is outwith their comfort zone. Agree with Alan's comments on this and because of everyone's attitude and committment, NMS record to date is excellent, thank God.
It's a long time since we organised a run, so will give some thought to doing one in the spring. Saying that, have just booked our long awaited road trip to Lake Garda via The Ring and Davos to Stelvio. Really looking forward to it. If anyone knows of any other "passes" that are in the locality, let me know.

I'm planning to do another "Fife Fryer" to Anstruther next year - initial thoughts are a different start venue (due to forth bridge roadworks) and late April date
Will also rerun the Deeside run later in the year probably Sept - Oct
Also happy to do the Perthshire run again sometime mid-year
I love going on the runs and have also really enjoyed organising them :D
Using Google maps or similar for initial planning, and combining initial scouts with other journeys we were making anyway have proved a good way to keep organising costs down.
We do the full recce in Helens diesel fiesta and make a day out of it.

I agree Malcolm - a longer run with a stop over allows more socialising and also gets us to parts of the country a bit too far away for one day runs.
Would be interesting to know how many folk would be keen on this type of run. I've got some ideas (as always  )

Gordon, we are booked from 26th May to 8th June, as follows. I would organise quickly, because we had difficulty getting some of the hotels we wanted.
26th Ferry from Newcastle to Amsterdam
27/28th 2 days at The Ring staying at The Tiergarden (Sabine's Mom's place)
29th Hotel Bayerischer Hof at Lindau on Lake Constance, which is a short way from
Davos to Stelvio to Lake Garda
30th to 5th Astoria Park Hotel in Riva
6th Hotel Rosenof near Waldesch
7th Ferry back to Newcastle.
Intend to do a couple of "runs" from Riva up into the Dolomites and a few trips arround the Lake, mainly half day outings. Really looking forward to it.
I'm also trying to book Mom and I a run on the BMW Ring Taxi, but they ain't taking bookings for 2012 yet. I did it last time with the delightful Sabine (she doesn't do it anymore) and it was oh so nice in many different ways

Honestly, you dont like East Fortune Air Museum? Have you been in the last couple years? Its been done up a fair bit and new exhibits and its really rather good. Concorde tour is excellent as is the forward fuselage of the 707 in traditional BOAC livery. They took delivery a couple years ago of a B.A BAC1-11 which is outside and public now get access to the restoration hanger.

Had to go a bit later as I wanted to drive round Monaco, so need to wait until the GP is past. My one concern is that the 2012 dates weren't up last time I looked for the Ring - don't want to rock up and find it's closed to the public...

I couldn't find 2012 dates either, so based it on 2011 and previous experience of Sun / Mon being OK. Tiergarden was also fully booked for Tues / Wed of that week, which made me think that something big was on at these dates and access would be limited. I'm sure we will get a couple of runs, even if it is in the evening of the Sunday.

Malcolm, I'll be honest, other than Museum Of Flight at East Fortune I wasn't sure what other airbases there were, but I know someone had a run organised in that area and it fell apart a few weeks before it was due to run and someone was going to take it on and that fell apart as well. The "airbases" was more a reference to that run because I'm sure that was what it was called. :idunno:
I think the East Lothian area is pretty undiscovered from a MINI run point of view, although the "Clan" sometimes use the Cranshaws road down past Whiteadder reservoir. But the squared off area from Pathhead to Dunbar to North Berwick to Musselburgh is jammed with cool roads with a mixture of long straights and twisties.
I don't want you to think I'm forcing anything on to you, but I can't think of any other member who - geographically - is better placed to seek out some roads and throw a run together.

Andy we organised a run back in 2006, I think called the East Lothian BBQ Run, which went from Musselburgh Services to Haddington, to Gifford over the Lammermoors to Cranshaws, then to Eyemouth via Chirnside and then back up the old coast road via Coldingham and through the ford at Pease Bay, onto Cockburnspath, Tyninghame and then North Berwick to our back garden for the BBQ. Was about 95 miles in total. See attached.

If anyone was interested, would be happy to organise for Spring, say end of March? As I think there is a gap in the callendar there. Rather than a BBQ at that time of year, we have a really good Indian restaurant in North Berwick that does a superb all day buffet for £10 a head. They are good friends and I know they would look after us. Anyone up for it?

There are no firm dates for any runs next year, albeit Mikey's show will almost definitely be in October.
Everyone has the opportunity to organise a run and select the dates that suit them best, as nice as it is to try and arrange it so people can attend it's often the case that some can attend and others cannot, hence the amount of runs that are generally organised.

Andy, could always get them to do chicken and chips for you.....or you could bring your own popcorn:popcorn:
What about Sunday 25th March, the day the clocks change for more light? If I get 6+ "yehs" I'll start a new thread and get planning.
Ill will be able to make that. Mum and Dad should aswell so thats 2 "yehs"

for paintballing events rebellion paintball in falkirk is the best (played at theyre walkons a number of times great guys) or theres a new indoor one in edinburgh
prob best if limited numbers to attend a walk-on day (as its much cheaper £30 for 2000 paint, game fee and kit hire) rather than a punter day where paint is £6-£12 per 100, game fee/kit hire.
