How to update your PS3 using a flash drive:-
1. Create a folder on the Flash Drive called PS3 it must all be in caps.
2. Inside this folder create another folder called UPDATE again all in caps.
3. Got to http://uk.playstation.com/help-support/ps3/system-software/download/ and scroll to the bottom, then click Agree. The system software will download.
4. Place the downloaded file (Should be a .pup file) inside the folder title UPDATE.
5. Stick the flashdrive into the PS3
6. Do the system update but select postable device. The PS3 should automatically find it on the flashdrive.
