i managed to reprogram the key last night with some information i googled if you like i shall share it :)
Step 1 take the main key used, place in the ignition and turn to just before engine start so dials are lit up - turn back off and remove from ignition then straight away press and hold unlock while pressing the lock button 3 times - however on the third press release the unlock button at the same time - nothing happens but quickly follow step 2
Step 2 take the second key that is not working and do exactly as step 1 however do not put it in the ignition just do the button sequence, the car will lock and unlock afterwards letting you know the key that was not working is now active.
you must do the second key within 30 seconds :)
Hope this saves you all some money :)

it was never an issue for a dealer to do this for you as the information on doing the code is in your owners manual :p

Your correct, but its also a man's way to 'save' money, so I guess reading the manual would be your next option?? LOL

it is, but then the key comes in 2 parts, also remember that its not the dealer that prices the parts, its MINI themselves lol

Not sure where you get the figure of £100 from, when the code vanished from my key, and after trying the method above, I took the car to Fairbairns, it was something like £27 incl. VAT to get it done.
Quite funny, actually as I asked how long it would take (knowing perfectly well) and was told it was quite an involved job and could take up to an hour. So I went for walk, realising I'd be better with my jacket I went back about 5 minutes later and witnessed the mechanic parking my car up and locking it (with the fob), so I popped back into the service reception only to be told "they're working on it now, should only be another 20-30 minutes"
The car sat there without being touched for another 25 minutes...:hand:
