Another passion/obsession/vice/interest/etc ;)..... I have is watches :yes nod:. Anyone else into watches? I don't just mean really expensive ones - I like all kinds.
My pride and joy however is a TAG Heuer Aquaracer that I bought in December 2007 - I had wanted a TAG for literally 10-15 years and finally got one when I was in LA that year while the exchange rate was $2/£1 :thumbs up:.
I've never photographed a watch before so thought this might be an interesting thread to start in our Photography Section - hope to see photos of lots of watches here  so I'll kick off with my Aquaracer.

Yeah, im a bit of a watch nut! It was passed on by Dad, who has not a bad collection! I got my best watch for our engagement last year, its a Tag Aquaracer Calibre S. I've also got a Breil that i've always wanted purely from the days of watching World Superbikes in the days of Troy Bayliss and Colin Edwards, who always got one when they stuck it on poll.
Anyway, here is a picture of my watch from the net, and will play around with the Macro settings on my camera and get a couple of pics up sometimes!

I have the Tag Heuer F1 Classic, I bought it fifteen years ago. (scary). Been with me ever since. It did go into its great round plastic case with the Big Tag on but now it has a few scratches etc I just keep beside the car keys these days. Still got the spare links in the case with the receipt.
Pic off Flee bay..............
First battery lasted ten years and that’s the only cost I’ve had with it as it had to be send it away for them to replace it as the jewellers said it had to be done right to guarantee the 200M.
Great watch that I’ve enjoyed but it was not that expensive back then around £200-300.
A friend bought a copy one and said " £20 and looks the same and tells the time" but I thought it looked rough and it lasted four months and even before that the fake Tag sticker was falling around inside it. Must Say I have always hated fake.

Ooooooohhh. Watches.. Drool. Lenore and I have a disgusting watch fetish. We'd have many more if we had the money, but our current list is....
Me:
Tag Heuer Formula 1 Kirium
Ebel 1911 Discovery
Lenore:
Raymond Weil Parsifal
Tag Heuer Formula 1
Dior Christal.
Lenore has her eye on an Omega with a gold bezel and tons of diamonds but it's £10k, so she's just gonna have to wait until we're rich beyond our dreams. She also fancies a different colour Dior and a Chanel. I have my eye on a Tag Calibre S with the electro-automatic engine, a couple of Chopard chronometers and a Ebel 1911 BTR. However, we're skint just now so they are all in a long line of "one day's".
I'll take some pics of the watches later on this week when we're off.

Omega...also drool! I really wanted a Planet Oceans chrono, but just couldn't justify the price. The standard Planet Ocean was just within budget, but 2k for just a standard movement was just too much for me!

RPN - Mondaine are very good watches... I have one for my everyday use.... very easy to see simple and classic and not a lot of money.
My watch fetish is as follows:
Not a stainless bracelet person.
I'm not a Rolex fan.... and not a Tag fan ... sorry. although the Monaco Tag I had was ok.... Breitling are ok but not really my style I had one well actually two but traded them.
If you buy wisely then a watch won't loose much money and you can trade it in against the next purchase.
My preferred brand of watch is Franck Muller.. I have two one bought in bond street and one bought the diamond district NY. honestly didn't save that much buying from the US.
Zenith Watches are my next fav brand.. I have two.. both bought in Switzerland..... great Country to visit if you love watches..
My Jaeger LeCoultre Reverso was another fav but Molly as a pup chewed the strap I put the watch somewhere safe and then never found it again same with my Ebel lost that when we moved back down the road..
Oris I had a couple of them but traded good watch and not a lot of ££££.
I had a Chopard dam thing got on my nerves with those dam happy fish floating about
I am ashamed to say that I have owned two Jacob & Co in my time ( well I had to). these have been traded.
I've had a few Omega ones in my time nothing special Allan has the Moon to Mars ... Snoopy and couple of other Omegas all along the same line all traded currently awaiting Bell & Ross to arrive.
Better stop at that but I like watches and buy and sell more than what I do Minis

I thought I'd broken it when it fell off the sink whilst I was washing up. I took it to a retired watch repairer who was fixing watches mainly as a hobby and to boost his pension. He took it apart cleaned it up and fitted a new battery and it worked fine, he was only going to charge me £5 but I made him take £10.

yeah needless to say mines was at the bottom end of the bracket and secondhand, although I do believe the ones you talk about were worn by the man himself David Beckham and his wife Posh hence why I bought mines, think they also liked Grimoldi but I could be wrong on that but a few celebs have worn the Grimoldi watches, I bought one from a Jewellers in St Marks Sq Venice, I still get a Christmas Card from them.LOL.
I should maybe add that any watch I buy is always second hand and never at the top end of the watch brand, only been stung the once and that was 2 christmases ago bought an omega and the bl00dy hands were loose kept gaining 5 hours every 10 mins.LOL

mines sort of ticks along but it is a battery one I would say my automatic watch sort of sweep so not much help.
this thread made me have a quick look through my watch box to see what I've got at the moment. Trouble is most watches I can't see unless I have my glasses on and I only need them for close up work so I am sort of buggered always need a mid to large face watch
I found nice Technomarine that I got last christmas don't wear it cause I can't see it. A gucci that has been in a box for the last 10 years that I forgot about and found a nice Van Der Bauwede watch Silver 800 that I forgot about also so I've just put it on and will wear it for the next few days.LOL a Maurice Lacriox think it needs a battery.

I love my Mondaine, very simple and easy to read design. As I said based on Swiss Railway clocks. The second hand of these clock goes round the clock face in 59 seconds, then stuck on the 12 position for an extra half a second!

Well just took my photos of the watches I have at the moment:
The first one is my Favourite watch which I got last year at the MotoGP at the TISSOT stand, picture of the front and rear of the watch. It only comes out on special occasions just now. :yes nod:
1997
2001
This one is a watch my mum bought for me as a late 21st birthday present and gave it to me on my 22nd birthday, which was 15 years ago now. It gave up the ghost 3 years ago while I was on holiday in Florida, so I had to buy myself a new watch to keep me going so whilst wandering around Wal-mart in Kissimmee I found the watch below this one (The black one), and it has now become my daily user and it is brilliant, it even has this feature where you tilt your wrist so much and it lights up itself, when I found that out I was like W O W  (yes im easily impressed, just a big kid at heart and always will be )
1998
1999
The next one is the one my dad always used... It's an OMEGA Gene've DYNAMIC I picked it up and took it out of my cupboard and its still working!!! after being in my cupboard for the last 15 years!!!
2000
Well thats my lot so far, not as impressive as others in here but I'm happy with what I've got so far, one day if and when I can afford it I would like to try and get a TAG Heuer coz I do like them but they are just too dear for me .

A recent purchase was this Rotary Chronospeed - I really like this as an every day watch. It was remarkably cheap but looks amazing on and catches a lot of admiring glances - I love the matt black finish on the bezel and buttons. Not unlike a TAG F1 I think. Amazingly, you get a lifetime warranty with every Rotary if you allow them to service it every 3 years :thumbs up:.

Gotta say, that Rotary looks stunning.:thumbs up: I have to admit I'm a huge snob and seldom even look at the Rotary's and Citizen's etc... I head straight to the expensive shelf and bypass the rest.
Thanks Andy, I was well impressed myself when I saw this Rotary watch, especially when I got it on sale because it was an old model - mineral glass, push-button clasp, waterproof with screw-down crown and everything. Rotary have some nice watches in their new Aquaspeed range, and I still can't believe they give you a lifetime warranty - you don't get anything like that from TAG! You should also check out Citizen (who give a 5-year warranty!) - especially their Ecodrive and perpetual calendar watches. Although Rotary and Citizen are not in the same league as Tag, Omega, etc., they are not "cheap" watches anymore - £200+ for their higher end models.
Having said that, if I had your money Andy I'd head straight to the expensive watches too .
After my visit to the MotoGP in Barcelona in 2009 i vowed i would buy the Tissot Limited Edition Helmet.
This edition has all the tracks engraved on changeable rear bezels for that year enclosed in the helmet allowing a wealthy fan to change the bezel for each race attended:-
That looks superb Alan - and what a great presentation box too :yes nod::thumbs up:.

I am no Watch guru by any means, but i must admit I have never heard of some of the names in this thread like Jacob & Co and Ebel and theres maybe a few more... Will need to have a good nosey round to see what kind of watch makers are out there.
Andy I can see why your drooling over that Tag and Ebel, they look amazing :yes nod:
Again this is the same in life as everything else, people live by their means and buy what they can afford to buy. At the moment my means are none existant and previously have not been much more than that either, that TISSOT I got was the most I have ever spent on a watch and it felt almost like I was getting a mortgage at the time!! but in comparison to some watches in here it's peanuts... So when I go jewellers shop window  I start from about the Citizen or £50 upwards mark and kinda stop at the lower 3 figure area otherwise I might have a heart attack if I look any further up. But then you are'nt going to really see any really fancy watches in Dundee jewllers anyway i wouldn't think.
I remember being in Barcelona out walking around the mall after dinner with Alan and his Julie drooling over the windows of one of the jewellers shops there, I must have looked like one of those Garfields that you see stuck on car windows with his face right up against the window and his hands(paws) stuck on the window. The same happened again whilst in London with my relatives last year...

Wish I had a picture of my childhood 'Timex' with its plastic strap.... now THAT was a PROPER watch - when you were about seven. Did it for me! Of course when I was seven they were still using Sundials. I still have it somewhere, so if the Antiques Roadshow comes to town, I'm sorted.
I don't even wear a watch every day, as everywhere I am usually has a clock in view. I have a Citizen 'Eco-Drive', which just tells me the time and the date. Simple but effective, probably the watch equivalent of a Ford Fiesta, and another one which is a strange 'surfing-themed' (ocean, not internet) velcro-fastened 'Gul-logo-d' thing, which is the watch equivalent of a VW Camper Van. I do like the look of some watches - it's the visual impact combined with the very clever 'technology in miniature' thing I think. Still, I have to say some of the prices are just plain daft, although I do understand the investment value/heirloom aspects. I'd still rather spend the dosh on Music, Gigs and MINI bits - sometimes the best times are when you forget the time!

Funnily enough, I thought about posting about this the other week but didn't know what the reaction would be.
I'm a watch geek...Have a fair few these days and a real thing for automatics.
So, I have good ones and "beaters", or my daily wearers if you will. I call them beaters, but I'd be gutted to bash them!
So, this was my collection about a year ago:
http://img229.imageshack.us/img229/4918/p1050490.jpg
This was a wedding present from the missus (she got the womens version with a silver face from me when we had our son)
http://img222.imageshack.us/img222/3652/p1050471m.jpg
This I'd wanted for a long time, love it:
http://img229.imageshack.us/img229/8158/p1050495.jpg
Since then, I've added one of these, it's a Japanese import Seiko called a Monster, can't get them in this country (well, you can, but they are all imports)
http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y287/Tiggercat69/SKX779K2.jpg
And recently, added this to the collection which I wear most days, it's a 3 timezone Hamilton Khaki on a rubber strap. Really comfy, though it's easily the largest watch I own.

You know it's funny, so many people have commented on that omega and it must be the plainest watch they do! I love it though, it's a reL dress watch (though in my book a mens dress watch should really have a leather strap) and goes well with everything. My wife was between it and a James bond dive omega, but I'm so glad she went for that one.

The strap on my seiko isn't the usual, it's a big chunky thing and comparable to the omega bracelet straps. I've really got into seiko of late, the seiko 5 range is a real goldmine for affordable automatic watches that are good quality, especially some of the import stuff with Japanese movements in them. If I could let you try it I would, it's a weighty beast of a thing!

They've gone up so much in the last 4 years it's rediculous. I got my Monaco on a very good deal and before the price went balistic, same with the Seamaster. The Seiko is second hand, and my Hamilton I picked up for much less than half price when my local jeweller was getting rid if the stock - timing is everything!
You can still pick up a Planet Ocean for OK money second hand if that's an option for you - just need to buy from somewhere respectable. I really like them, my mate has one (with a black bezel on a leather strap) and it's stunning.
Or if it's the look you like, some of the Seikos look similar for not massive money - have a google for Seiko SKX007 or the SKX009 - they're both on my hit list. Or the Monster that I have can be had with an Orange face (most of them are actually Orange, I wanted the black one). They also do a version of it called a night monster, goes for a load more money but it's all black - black face and bezel, and the strap is usually metal too. I like it a lot!!

Thanks! My camera is an Olympus E-420 with the 14-42mm Zuiko lens - it was mounted on a tripod and set on macro mode, no flash, 2s delayed shutter to avoid camera shake. The watch is sitting on a mirrored wall tile with a Mini Clubman accessories brochure stood up behind it . I used natural light coming in from a window to the right - I've found that using direct light from a flash or spotlight is not helpful so I like using natural light and a slow shutter speed if necssary. I've tried using a small light "tent" but haven't been too successful with it so far - need to try some more with it as many people swear by them.

Well, I changed the strap to a rubber diver's strap and it has transformed the look of this watch. I wanted to wear it more casually and the new strap seems to fit the bill perfectly IMHO . Hope you like the new photos.

Croc straps can look ok but the colours need to be right. Brown croc with a black face is not (in my view) a good look in the first place. Plus that watch is crying for something more hard wearing than leather.

Very nice, while we are on about watches my Tag just started its five second hand movement to indicate its battery is on the way out. Popped into a jewellers Braehead and they wanted £50 and a three week turnaround.
So took a look and this Martains does top of the line way beyond my watch and can do while I wait plus its a short drive to the other side of Glasgow.
The cost to replace the cell for an origianl Tag F1 is £25.00, fully inclusive of Swiss Renata cell & testing for water-resistance to 50mts.
This work can usually be completed while you wait!
Testing to 200mts and above, if required, is £35.00 and takes aprx’ 1 week.

I haven't used them, but they get a decent write up on some of the watch forums I look at.
I guess the key thing is if you want it pressure tested again to 200M - 50M basically means it's splash spoof, 200M means it won't get damaged if you properly dunk it.

Here's the "official" rating of the various levels of water resistance...
Water Resistant or 30 m Suitable for everyday use. Splash/rain resistant. Not suitable for swimming, snorkeling, water related work and fishing. Not suitable for diving.
Water Resistant 50 m Suitable for swimming, white water rafting, no snorkeling water related work, and fishing. Not suitable for diving.
Water Resistant 100 m Suitable for recreational surfing, swimming, snorkeling, sailing and water sports. Not suitable for diving.
Water Resistant 200 m Suitable for professional marine activity and serious surface water sports. Not suitable for diving.
Diver's 100 m Minimum ISO standard (ISO 6425) for scuba diving at depths Not suitable for saturation diving. Diver's 100 m and 150 m watches are generally old(er) watches.
Diver's 200 m or 300 m Suitable for scuba diving at depths Not suitable for saturation diving. Typical ratings for contemporary diver's watches.
Diver's 300+ m for mixed-gas diving Suitable for saturation diving (helium enriched environment). Watches designed for mixed-gas diving will have the DIVER’S WATCH L M FOR MIXED-GAS DIVING additional marking
My favourite though is for the ladies' Cartier watches, in the literature that comes with them owners are advised to be careful not to get perfume anywhere near the watch as it can damage the internals :frown:

Reminds me of an old joke....
A very successful lawyer parked his brand new Porsche Carrera GT in front of the office, ready to show it off to his colleagues. As he got out, a truck came along too close to the curb and completely tore off the driver's door.
Fortunately, a cop in a police car was close enough to see the accident and pulled up behind the Porsche, his lights flashing. But, before the cop had a chance to ask any questions, the lawyer started screaming hysterically about how his Porsche, which he had just picked up the day before, was now completely ruined and would never be the same, no matter how hard the body shop tries to make it new again.
After the lawyer finally wound down from his rant, the cop shook his head in disgust and disbelief. "I can't believe how materialistic you lawyers are," he said. "You are so focused on your possessions that you neglect the most important things in life."
"How can you say such a thing?" asked the lawyer.
The cop replied, "Don't you even realize that your left arm is missing? It got ripped off when the truck hit you!!!"
"OH, MY GOD!" screamed the lawyer, "MY ROLEX!"

cheers - slightly more accurate than my "you can dunk it" comment :-)
Perfume - I'm guessing that if you have the watch on, and continue to spray perfume on your wrists then the mist will get into the internals and over time gunk it up. Would need a LOT of perfume though!
I'm only just about brave enough to dunk my 200M divers watch in the bath, never mind to wear it when swimming. Mind you, it's so heavy and I'm such a wuss, I'd be going round in circles endlessly!

ignoring photos for a bit ;-)
So, one thing I've been looking at is sourcing a birth year watch. For some sentimental reason, I like the idea of owning a watch that is the same age as me.
Fortunately, I wasn't born in the 80's as there lies horrendousness, but in 1976, where you find some absolute gems.
Current favourites are Seiko Bullheads (but realistically, they're too big for my wrists), Omega (I'd love a moon watch), or something from Heuer like a Monza or Carrera.
Anyone else looked at doing this?

Lots of options on colours, and really helpful too as to what might look good on it. From order to delivery in a week too. He just makes very chunky stuff and it's not cheap, but the Hamilton leather strap is £150! I also bought a tool that allows me to change the strap myself - it's SO easy to do!
All in all, I'm really pleased.

Beautiful watch Ian. As you said, you cannot go wrong with a chrono like that. A lot of watches, especially the TW Steel ones look awesome just now as they are huge, but that style will never last, where as this is timeless. I love the clear back on it too so that you can see the mech.

Lovely watch, my favourite from their current range. I just love the brown leather strap contrast with the face, looks superb. Must stop looking at watches...
I'd be wearing it a lot though - watches are for wearing ;) I went through a spell of wearing my Monaco every day but when I bought the Hamilton I tend to wear it now as it's a bit smaller.

Moved this thread to the Off Topic forum as it does seem more appropriate rather than the Photography forum. As much as there's loads of pics in here, it's more watch chat than pics, so makes sense for it to move.

That's a lovely watch. I've never had what anyone would call a 'good' watch usually buying every day kind of stuff. Christmas 2010 one of the boys bought me a Rado. Been wearing it everyday since then. When I compare it's blemish free casing etc compared to my old one that is covered in minor scratches and scuffs I think I'm more appreciative of the idea of having a 'good' watch. I like looking at the high end stuff but unfortunately that lottery win continues to be elusive to allow me to indulge myself

My current every day watch about 6 + years old. Hate the original strap so tight up to the face so swapped out for a strap on another watch I have much more comfy to wear.

Here's my Omega SMP. I have a few other watches, one Seiko Black Monster, and a Casio Pro Tek for when I'm training, but I love the Seamaster Pro. Omega stopped making these and it's quite sought after in the watch community so it'll hold it's value well. Might end up on my eldest's wrist on his 18th but I have a long time to enjoy it before that comes around. would eventually like to add a Planet Ocean or Rolex DSSD.

And my amazingly gorgeous wife went halfers with me on this for my birthday. Been drooling over this watch for a couple of years and I absolutely love it. The sweep of the second hand is awesome.

It's a lovely thing and I love wearing it, it always feels special as I'd wanted one for about 15 years and it, along with my Omega are the only two watches in the box that are always safe. Took about 4 years of hinting to get it though ;-) My wife bought it for me one Christmas after we got engaged as we had always agreed that when we did, she'd get a big stone and I'd get a Monaco. Can't believe the price of them now though, I'd be looking for a good second hand one now (and if you're into Monacos, check this site out LINK (http://heuerboy.com/heuerwatches.htm) - I really like the Monza he has at the moment. )

Cheers Euan. It's really not that big. For a while I wanted a Raymond Weil chronograph watch which looked amazing in the brochures, on the web and the advertising placards etc. But when I finally saw the watch it was enormous. The Chopard is just a beauty! Love it!:thumbs up:

Re: Raymond Weil - the Freelancer chrono? It's a lovely looking thing but it's a 42 which is a big as I can wear. My Hamilton GMT is 42 but looks like a 44 as it hardly has any bezel on it and I stopped wearing it as the strap made it look even bigger. So I had a strap made to my spec and now it's never off my wrist.

It wasn't the current Freelancer which Ian King has - which is the nicest looking RW watch I've ever seen. It was a special edition thing for their sponsorship of the Brits a few years ago. Will have a look and see if I can find a pic somewhere.

Ian you need to watch that - no pun intended. You are only allowed a very small amount of value of goods bought out of the EU, brought into the UK - like £200 or something. If customs catch you bringing in a £3k watch from out of the EU (might even apply to Europe) they will whack you with 6% duty then another 20% VAT!

Ooh a B&M Classima! Lovely watch Gis. Something totally different from your Breitling(s?) and TW. Where you just after a classic dress watch?Hey Col, i actually prefer the clean lines of a pure basic watch, i'll likely wear the B&M daily and leave the main Breitling in the display case, it's a bit expensive for daily wear.
I got that B&M for a steal on eBay, retail is $1,750 and i got it for $600, providing it is as described then i'll be truly happy.
I'm keeping an eye on a similar but much older B&M that's currently at $80 to use as my work watch, that'll free up the other Breitling (current work watch) to get it serviced and the strap professionally cleaned

I'm on the lookout for a nice Tag F1 next I think, a real one this time not a copy but to be honest my Titanium Citizen is never really off my wrist these days and all the otehr watches are just on my bedside table LOL
