Plockton is good. If you want to hit Skye but don't want Portree then Broadford or Kyleakin are decent options and are accessible by the bridge. Not as picture postcard as Plockton, but maybe more practical and then at least one island does get hit

edit - you could even do the Glenelg to Kylereha ferry

its a horrible little twisty road down to Elgol mind

The road is all blind bends and very twisty. More the classic style single track roads rather than the busy ones up by Durness. If you get a good night though the views across are superb. I'll see if I can dig out a couple of pics from the last time I was there when I get home (and subject to memory ;))

I've done the Elgol thing a few times now Paul going over on the ferry coming back via the bridge obviously all from the black isle and honestly Alex from NM is correct it's a bugger of a road and if the weather ain't great disappointing once you get to Elgol.

As for Plockton just going to have a wee think as we also done this route several times on a Sunday for a wee jaunt but always in a 4x4.

Paul, Plockton is beautiful, but there ain't a lot there for an overnight stay. Not sure they would have a hotel that could cope with all of us. That's why Skye or Kyle of Lochalsh might be better. There are 2 or 3 hotels at Lochalsh.

Fi, we've gone past Stomeferry for the last two trips, is there a car park?

Alex, is there anywhere else worth visiting in southern Skye for the view rather than the Elgol viewpoint, I'm looking at streetview and the roads around Carbost look to have views of the Cullin, perhaps we could fit in a distillery visit at Talisker?

Ah, think you posted this before I put the route on NM. The 2 loops of Skye would be good, but would add time.

For the good folk of NMS here's the maps (http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?f=d&source=s_d&saddr=Sligachan,+Highland,+UK&daddr=Dunvegan,+Isle+Of+Skye+to:Edinbane,+Portree+ to:Uig,+Portree+to:Staffin,+Portree+to:Portree&geocode=FTglagMdX8ah_ymD7zP9XTqMSDEX1nAEdb9ZtA%3B% 3B%3B%3B%3B&hl=en&mra=ls&sll=57.287992,-6.175137&sspn=0.136556,0.307961&ie=UTF8&t=h&z=10)
