Looks cracking, I've done 40 miles on my roadie this week and am really feeling it in the legs!

I'd definitely look into going clipless though if you are going to a lot of miles - it's much easier and doesn't need to cost a lot - I got fairly basic Shimano pedals for 20 quid and a pair of Mavic shoes for 60, but it really does make a massive difference.

I've just ordered some new bib shorts, should help with the longer rides I'm planning this summer!

Make sure the soles are stiff enough, it makes a huge difference to the efficiency on the bike. You won't wear them out in a hurry unless you're doing massive miles so it's worth spending a little bit more to get the stiffer sole. You'll also feel the benefit of a better shoe than an expensive pedal.

I fitted these pedals, bottom of the range Shimano but they work a treat - they are as good as the 105 but just heavier and I'm currently of the thinking that it's going to be more easier for me to lose the weight of the pedals than to keep shaving grams on kit, and a lot cheaper ;-) LINK (http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Models.aspx?ModelID=5369)

You should try 20miles on MTB tyres....:thud:I sound like a Landrover coming down the road:laugh: and its hard work I can tell you..!!
I fitted clipless pedals a couple of months ago and I've never fallen off so much in my life....I keep forgetting to twist my foot to release my shoe and usually end up on my ear:rolleyes: Fortunatelly it all been low speed crashes so far and I am slowly getting used to them:p

Did it once on the road, vowed never to do it again! I've done it off road on a fair few occasions, used to love going over the Tyrebagger and over round Loch Muick, which is a murderous route!

I don't enjoy doing that in a car. How many miles is that? 40?

It's been years since I did it so don't really remember - I used to do a loop from Glen Doll over and round Loch Muick and back again, and I did a couple of loops from near the Balmoral Estate once but can't really remember that loop. Don't think it was over 40 miles though.

This was all about 15-20 years ago now, on my rigid frame Trek 8000 - wouldn't dream of it now (though I still have it).

I used the MTB a couple of times a week doing bout 15-16 miles off road and on road, A think it will get used more for taking my daughter out on the back of it now i've got the road bike.

I'm liking on road much better than off road, feel you need to work harder on road an you go further.
Will venture out a bit further once a get a bit fitter.

It's all the nutters in their cars zooming by you far to close that kinda put me off the road bike scene I must admit:frown: Its bad enough in the 3 miles of road work I do on the MTB to get to my off road circuit:rolleyes:

I'm really lucky in that our village is surrounded by quiet roads and lanes through Warwickshire, so I've got very little busy roads to ride on. The other massive benefit (for road cycling!) is that it's pretty flat round here. So within 3 minutes or so I can be cycling through fields and rolling countryside. I wouldn't have got a road bike before I lived up here though, it would have been suicidal in London!

The local cycling club start a circuit 2 mins from my front door every Thursday and they take up nearly the whole road when there all out :hand: I know a guy who cycles with them and he came a real cropper in the bunch when it all went a bit 'Pete Tong' :thud:At least when I fall off its usually a softish landing and I don't have 15 other guys plough into me

I go to the gym twice a week and on a friday I came home, get out the minkey suit and into the lycra *whooot whoooo* and take on a 16k local run on specialised rock hopper.

Love it, I have a route that knocks your pan in and burns hunners of calories, in prep for the MHFS10k in bellahouston next month......no bad for a fat bloke!
