We need a tad more info here. What era of MINI are we talking about, R50/53 (2001-2006) or R56 (2006 to date) ?

i'd guess that the 2nd gen cooper S has resolved some of the issues and has some new ones all of its own

not really. only had it 10 months so far but compared to other cars i've had its been fine.

Only real problem was when I got it last year the gearbox and thermostat had to be replaced (all under warranty though)

well i have had bot first gen mini cooper and cooper s and had diffrent probs with both i had the gearbox go in my cooper and think that was about it but in my s i had the alt pully go radatior and water bottle go cam shaft dam and a water leak in the boot

Didn't both have the left hand pull which needed the suspension looked at and also the passenger door leaked due to a bad spot weld

My R50 04 Coop (pre facefilt) has suffered the 'common'ish' faults with steering columns, racks & pumps , although 95% of all this was covered under warranty. As far as I am led to believe, these faults can affect the R53 as well.
