8 days !! , I'm assuming this drug allows you to reduce your smoking over an 8/9 day period.

When I gave up the weed as i was told that in order to class yourself as a 'non smoker' you had to be stopped for 12 weeks. I was 'lucky' (if I had really been lucky I would never have smoked in the first place) as I was able to stop on each occassion using 'brut willpower'. Since 2000 (I started in 1978, 'ouch') I had managed to stop on 3 occassions (lasting from 6 months to 18 months) until my last most successfull attempt in Sept 2006 to date.
Each time I stopped I really wanted to do so & I reckon you are 50% there if really want to quit. I used to set myself a date & go for it. Hardest thing was socialising as you could still smoke in pubs back then. Once I got over the first weekend I'd be really chuffed & then aim for the second weekend. As I built up week afer week I then said to myself would'nt it be crazy to ruin all that hard work for one ciggy (I have learned many times over that one ciggy soon became a 20 pack, so never ever be tempted , EVER).

So how am I now after 3 plus years? ....................... I never ever have the urge to smoke, in fact I hate the smell of them. In fact I don't even think about it. Crazy thing is that my fiancee is a 'light' smoker & my friends all reckoned I would buckle, but ain't thus far & never ever will do.

Very best of luck to you, if I can crack it anyone can as I thought I had the worst will power in the world.

My understanding of Champix is that it should be taken for a couple of weeks before you stop smoking. It works on the same reciptors as nicotine, meaning that it should lessen the craving for nicotine, and remove any pleasure from taking nicotine. It can have some pretty serious side effects, ar I know your doctor will have told you.

I'm in the process of stopping smoking just now too, but am relying on will power (and the odd bit of low dose Nicorette gum). All going well so far, and I've smoked since 1983! If you really want to stop, you will find the mental strength.

My Mum uses Champix, she said she liked it over the other products that are ment to stop smoking.

I have set my date in april so i can atleast cut down until then, but im the same, i really hate it and wornder whats to addictive towards it!

I am away to buy a machine called Quitkey and that basically calculates your smoking, reducing it over 34 days to nothing www.quitkey.com

thanks all and yes you have to take it for 12weeks then your gp will decide if you need another 12weeks but apparently your second 12weeks gives you more of a chance to quit long term but i hate it and cost me and my hubby £280 a month that would pay my mortgage a month crazy amount of £

Good luck with it, personally hate smoke being a non smoker! My father was a heavy smoker and fair play to him he got laser treatment and never touched the stuff again. Ten minutes behind the ear I'm sure it was and he never thought about a cigarette again. Just a pity his excess in the drink department killed him.

My father god love him was probably the main reason I dont smoke or drink.

£280 a Month.:thud:

Good luck, my girlfriend and I are fast approaching three weeks smoke free, with this and the other tales above it shows that it can be done.

Important thing is wanting to stop and changing your routine, as you’ll find you have plenty of spare time..... All the best.

Little sister stopped smoking the week before she sat her driving test last year, after three days of taking champix she felt sick as soon as she started smoking and hasn't touched a cig since, she swears by it, that and lolly pops when you get the urge!

My Kim used this and had to go in to some doc to be examined every week as there are serious side effects to taking this stuf. Anyway she did stop but it never lasted. Hope you have better luck.
