Since 2006 we have annually 'raided' across the border whether to Oxford to visit the 'mothership' or last year (to the superb/excellent) MINI 50 at Silverstone. Don't really know what is on the 'southern' calendar for 2010 but I for one would miss the possibility of popping over to visit our 'native friends'. Has Oxford run it's course?? what do you think?? Could we join up on a run with Northern MINI that would incorporate an overnight stay?? Is there a race meeting / car event we could go see??

This is just a 'suggestion' seeker so what's your thoughts :thumbs up: or if anyone has/had something in the pipeline then 'stand up' & say :yes nod:

jings, auld man - great minds think alike... :yes nod::yes nod:

I was just thinking about this earlier in the week... I did think that it would have to be around Sept next year to give people time to save up some cash (as most of the regular runners are doing the NM Highland Tour).

I think Oxford still has it's place for some, but some have said that they would not go back again. It's personal preference really.

I have always wanted to go "down south" for a big show or to go to a round of the UK MINI Challenge so maybe we could roll this into a long weekend ? :thumbs up:

How about a Northern England Tour?

We (NM) could put together some highlights for you guys to see. I was thinking the Lakes, the North Pennines, York and Newcastle.

If you have some places you want to visit we can scout out a good route...

Better not even be thinking about leaving the mini scene. For that matter even selling your car. We had this discussion before you have one of the nicest looking cars on here, in fact one of the nicest minis i have ever seen stop being daft. Ok so it's not turbo charged who cares. Lets be honest your fast enough with your diffuser,;) goodness knows what you would be like with a turbo:D

Hmm, this has got me thinking... ouch!

I wonder if its possible to combine all the best roads in England and Wales into a super road trip?

Durham Dales - Hartside and others
Yorkshire Dales, Buttertubs etc.
North Wales around Snowdonia
Peak District, Snake Pass and Cat and Fiddle

Trouble is the roads will always be busy.

Did some of the Dales and Buttertubs just a few weeks back, great part of the country but missed out on the Lakes due to the weather packing up at Kendal on the Road Home.

Always fancied the Oxford run as I’ve never been although I like the sound of……

So far next year it’s the highland tour, and if its up and running the Perthshire pleasure IV that looks a cracker.

If people want to do a tour then more days you can go for then the more you can add in...(assuming travel from Glasgow)

2 days Lakes, Yorkshire and Durham Dales (Kirkstone, Honister, Hartside, Buttertubs)
3 days Lakes, Yorkshire and Durham Dales, Peak District
4 days Lakes, Yorkshire and Durham Dales, Peak District and Snowdonia

Peak District, Snake Pass and Cat and Fiddle

Better roads than Snake Pass if you are going to do the Peak District - too many wagons on the Snake.

Should try

Winnats Pass down to Castleton then go down the blue john mine

and

The road up over Holme Moss and down to Holmfirth - best fish and chips to be had at the Hollowgate Fishery (miss out the Compos cafe, its just for the tourists)

Ooo, good point Martin, its been a while since I was round near that area so I need to do a proper reccie. There's plenty of stuff to see around Castleton as well, I think there'll be some real interest from NM as well as NMS.

Grew up at the bottom of the snake pass, and can give you lots of good routes round that way.

Should run to Derwent reservoir too - and see where the bouncing bomb was tested, cant promise you will get a Lancaster fly past but if you happen to be there on the right day you might well get one.

I'm happy for you to come along Martin, just as long as were not all waiting for you to keep up, Datsuns aren't that quick are they? :D

Seriously though, I'd welcome the input if its what people want to do. Its been a while, I know there is some great roads down there but I can't remember which ones they are...

If when the time comes you want some local knowledge you know where I am - can even recommend some good stop over points in the area if required.

It might be possible to combine Oxford and a N England tour, but it would depend on when the MINI do the factory visits?

16th October 2009, 09:31 AM
Well I would say do a n englanad tour as we have done Oxford loads I have been round 3 times now and it dos not change I know Nms have been there the last 4 years

I think a tour round lakes/yorkshire area would be good as there are good roads round that way

Top of our list is another factory tour. If it was next Aug/Sep say, that would be two and a half years since the last tour.

We do like the idea of the North of England weekend though.

That long

I 'm happy enough with Oxford as I can tie up a trip to see my wee sis, although some kind of race meet or festival (Goodwood) just appeals more at the mo (MINI 50 @ Silverstone spoiled me/us)

Just as long a there is demand for an England trip in 2010 then I'm happy, this & The Highland Tour & it's a :thumbs up: from me :D

If you're creative with the route on the way down you can still add in a couple of hours of great driving on the way to Oxford

Craig

Before this discussion kicked off I was planning an Oxford trip/weekend for around Aug/Sep next year (so it was a few months after the Highland Tour so most folk could afford it).

Plenty time to sort something out, but I think we could make this a corker. :yes nod:
