Oooh I say...................

Looks like its been kissing bollards though...............1 carefull lady owner?

What did you pay for it...if you dont mind me asking. Is it a runner/non runner, miles, tax & MOT'd? PM me if you dont wish to openly post, would be of interest to know what one in need of attention goes for. We've still not made up our mind's what were doing with ours, its just too easy to shut the garage door & forget about it for another few months!

just makes life so much easier with genuine panels, they fit alot better as they are made from the original press tool and not made using an actual panel for the template.

Mates driving to somerford mini this morning to fill the back of his 58 clubby with MPi front end, door skins, rear valance and 4 trims that cover the seams.

Mind and get your painter to paint under the new wings etc as all the metal work under the arches was the colour of the car when they left the factory.

Im getting my painter to paint the underside and back of my wings, front panel and A panels before he welds them onto the car so that they look tip top underneith.

Yeah, I take my hat off to you. I wish I had the skills to tackle something like that. I know my "to be" father in law rebuilt a TVR S (there was no rust to deal with) but we'd love to get stuck into something like that! We talked about it briefly after fitting my spot lights, but decided we didn't have the time at the moment to do it!

I'll have to scan in my mates pic of his Classic (S plate) He started out not being able to weld, by the time he was finished he was like a professional. You done the rear Sub frame.

The old Mini's were really bad they just rusted to death and holes at the bottom of the windscreen. Ended up my mates car was more filler then metal.

Loved them all the same.

The best bit of a build is after you get a sparkling, shiney bare body back from the painter and you then get to build it up. Its like watching a car going along a production line except you get to build all of it yourself.

What an amazing amount of work and dedication. As someone who finds polishing a car hard work, this is unbelievable. I take my hat off to you.
This may sound daft, but is it possible to buy a new shell and all the body parts, so making a "new " mini from the bits? What would it cost to do it this way...ballpark figure?

ianking
26th January 2011, 09:21 AM
Heritage motor company are making shells complete with doors, tailgate, bootlid etc and Im sure they are about £3800

weefossy
27th January 2011, 09:34 PM
So with a good donner car, you could just about have a "brand new" Mini for £12k? I wonder if the new shell etc is made of better metal than the originals.

Duncan Stewart
29th January 2011, 09:26 PM
I looked into it a few years back and a new rolling shell was about £8K delivered from British motor heritage. This was new shell with doors, bootlid & bonnet, fully painted, fitted with new front & rear subframes complete with brakes & suspension, and a new set of alloy wheels and tyres. The new shells are made from better quality metal than the 90's Rover minis and have better rust proofing.
I thought a low mileage, but very rusty 90's mini would be about £2K

so about £10K plus replacing all the bits best renewed (brake lines, etc) and broken bits

So I would say yes, if doing it yourself £12K sounds a good estimate

Hope this helps

That takes me back twenty years! :smilewinkgrin:ouch............and I thought my best friend was mad when he did his Mini the same way. Car was a shell but had the windows in but we just put the car on it’s side. I'd always be worried after that about the rear sub-frame not ever being done in the Mini's. In fact after seeing five or six original Mini’s getting rebuilt it put me off them as I’m just not mechanical minded at all.
That bit that is just under the front window at the sides next to the wing always needed cut out and replaced.
The end result will be worth it. I’d still love a classic but I’d only do it if I had a garage to keep it good.

Yeh Ewan staying BRG all underside painted and looking like new I did think about a colour change at one point but to late now

This pic was a test fit of new exhaust heat shield and subframe with all brake lines made up with braided hose its actually a doddle to make these brakelines up hardest part is cutting the braided hose without fraying them. All fuel lines are going to be made up in braided hose aswell so much to do lol

When I was cutting my braided fuel lines for my kit car I wrapped some electrical tape round the area I was going to cut. Then just cut through the middle of the tape with a hacksaw. You can also use two jubilee clips for the same effect.
Gives you a nice clean cut and no fraying :thumbs up:

Have you looked at this.....

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/bmw-k100-cylinder-head-mini-series-conversion-/160754893727?pt=UK_Motorcycle_Parts&hash=item256dbd039f

I've seen these before and it would appear to be a relatively easy mod.
