As most of you folks know I have moved into my new place on Friday. Plugged in my BT home hub and everything was working (all lights green on box) Anyway went to go online and it was really slow 96kbs slow:eek:. Contacted BT this morning and I was told that there is a 10 day optimisation period so it will take this time for the eschange to determined the best speed. Is this correct never heard of this b4. Tried an on line test with the WIFI and the ethernet cable in still the same. Help

ADSL lines do have a stabilisation period, normally a couple of weeks, where your ISP's equipment attempts to determine the highest speed that your line can reliably carry. Your speed seems very low though, but without knowing the distance from the exchange, and the package you are on, it's hard to say. During the stabilisation period, it might be worth rebooting the router a few times to force it to resync with your ISP, and check the line speeds that the router is reporting, as well as the measurement's you are making. These speeds will probably vary wildly from pretty low, to pretty high. When I changed to O2 broadband a couple of year ago, I was getting 16mb dl and 1mb ul, but the connection dropped every few days. During the stabilisation period, the speed dropped to about 13.5mb / 1mb, which is what it stays at all the time now according to speedtest.net, although my router says my line syncs at 16,266 /1,217 kbps.
O2 are worth looking at - no traffic shaping, no blocked ports, no download limit, excellent speed, free 24/7 UK support who know what they are doing all for a tenner!

Best way to find out how good an ISP is to check out their customer support forums. You'll always have some negative comments but lots indicates an underlying problem. E.g. O2s had loads a few months back, I think the problems were down south primarily and caused by oversubscription.
Given the fact that you're going to be out in the sticks you might find that your connection will be slow as you could be a long way from the exchange. Its this that has the biggest effect on your connection speed, and it won't make any difference which ISP you pick as they all be the same. If you have a 'long line' you may find that you are unable to get Broadband via a BT line.
I've checked the mobile broadband coverage, Orange who has the best 3G coverage of all the networks, doesn't have any on Arran. However, 3 might (just) have coverage on the East Coast of Arran
