When renewing the engine oil should I fit a new drain plug/ bolt? The reason I ask is this was recommended to me when I had my mx5. I presume it has a new rubber seal.

You dont have to fit a new washer but its up to you. Im pretty sure the mini has a copper washer as apposed to a rubber seal. You dont need to change the drain plug though, just give the end of it a wipe over, they have a magnetic tip which collects any minute fragments.
Change the filter though but remember not to over tighten the plastic filter casing and ensure that the rubber seal on the filter housing is in situ properly.

when I bought the new oil filter kit there was a new copper washer in it.
